yeah i've done that ^^ but no problem just slammed it back in

mostly i charge the battery on the bike so less chance to fuck up

if you have that Shimano Battery take it out turn the bike over and check all those allen bolts holding the latch on the bike, mine were all loose after 2 yrs of the battery bouncing around on the bike

ID:	499644 I just bought a used Kona El Kahuna SUV and noticed after I took it home that it has a wrench icon on the display. I've been googling it and haven't gotten much info. I took it for a ride and it feels like its working fine apart from the safety lights which seem broken. Maybe that's why the wrench is there? I didn't have time to do a thorough inspection before getting it but it was a great deal so if it continues to run I'll be happy.

Wasn't difficult to find that you need a service

But what do they mean by service? The motors are not designed to need service.

I'm betting you could get rid of it in E-tube somehow but I would just keep riding and ignore the wrench

I forget if i ever had the wrench but if i did I would have ignored it

5200 kms at < 13kph half of that distance up hill in boost, no problem so far .

not really, so that battery is >8lbs but are you sure its the battery or the motor or do the cables need zap strapping in ??

the EP8 does tend to rattle a bit when not pedaling, I think having updated firmware ( i'm up to 4.3 ) mitigates some of that noise or maybe I just get used to it

what you may wana check is the battery latch which is pretty easy, so you turn the bike over & remove the battery to check the bolts on the latch holding the battery in to see if it moves , there are 6 in total 2 sizes so I found all of the allen bolts on my santa cruz bullit were loose I would assume from that > 8lbs of battery bouncing/ working on that latch

I'm at > 3 yrs of running that EP8 now

On most ebikes, the manufacturer does a kinda half-assed job of silencing all the wires. If you're lucky, at best they may wrap parts of them in foam tubing. Your best bet if you want to quiet the rattles is get a brick of moto foam, open up the battery cover, and try and bundle the wires together. Then cut sheets of moto foam to fit inside the frame wherever the cables may make contact. If your ebike has a top tube display, remove that and repeat the process up there.

so I'm just riding along when the EP8 motor quits/ display goes bank / then the screen is on like when you power up but the bike in OFF mode, so I put it in Boost and keep going but it starts doing it more often until the bike is dojng it constantly , time for a new bike ?

I had been working on the bike wanking about with the seat dropper but it has been ridden since then, try reseating the battery which doesnt fix it, I tap the side of the display the display flashes so check the plugs on the display and the middle one ( goes to the motor ) is loose so wtf, I reseat the plug put it in boost and away we go

So I had been in the battery compartment to snip a cable tie holding that wire and the dropper cablehousing, didnt re-zip tie anything but that didn't seem like it ?

The cleaning/ lubing/ carbon paste on the stem service procedure the week before was probably what loosened that plug cuz the bar kinda hung there by the cables and wires as i do the work ... next time support the bar during the work

wasn't sure if this should be in E-bike or the " I'm an idiot " thread

Shit happens. Youre rolling and you have more knowledge so all good.
Or you could get the new santa cruz eeb set for release this month. Rumours of it having a bosch cx 5 and being a 4 bar linkage, not vpp, and can run a longer dropper

Sounds lame ^^ do you have any links ?

Actualy I had pulled the end off that middle wire from the motor last year in some willows so it was totally dead I had to pedal & push but this time it was intermitent so a little harder to scope but afterwards ... OH Yes I see

i was going thru the scenarios on the upgrading ( report it stolen push in river ) but actualy I really like the handling of the Bullit, i like the mullet, I Iike VPP and I like full power, if I could change anything more power would be great

I know people have converted to the ep801. The 801 has been competitive with the bosch cx race in power stages this year. They have a free download for existing 801 owners to update to that. From ep8 to 801 you'd have to get the motor, battery, display and possible the mode switch though.
Probably easiest to just get a replacement ep8 if thats becomes an issue or battery if thats the issue and just stay with your system. I see a guy in poland/fb selling new, refurbished and barely used ep8's anywhere from 450€ to 600€ . I may go that route and upgrade my e8000 to an ep8
No link for you. Guy on the emtb forums started a new santa cruz thread. Sounds like he's getting info from a bike shop. Maybe your shop has the deets and can show you. Sounds like tge embargo drops this month

I ride solo cuz everyone else is working so it has enough power if i have no one to compare it to

New ep8 from shimano canada if and when they have stock is the question though. I didnt find them very supportive and have heard others echoe that setiment. If they have stock i cant see it being too drawn out though.
More umph would be nice anytime. Just more fun but id definitely want that in the mts. Here i get buy unless im with people on 85-90nm bikes

I would be very, very interested in one of these IF:

    It can be discretely de-restricted
    Could run a coil over
Wasn’t a first time product from an unproven manufacturer/company.

    Sounds incredible, buuuutt…

You can run a coil and it has a flip chip for mullet. Sounds like a beast. Im curious if it can be long stroked to 160ish rear travel.Similar system weight of the new bosch system(motor and battery). Internal battery saves most of the weight

These run big. I could ride a small and get it under 50lbs with a bit of tweaking on this build. Dream machine!!

The pinion is pretty interesting but if some bike brand isnt into it yet I'm not really interested in being the crashtest dummy, IME the cheap NX stuff worked fine and with with 85nm's of motor I'm not that worried about weight .

As i have said before i buy a bike with a motor not the motor with a bike

    Electric Bike Thread

Two weeks in Italy renting Ebikes. Plagued by mechanicals. Reminded that e-bikes are still in the early days that dropper posts have finally emerged from. For years I said, “I don’t give a fuck about electronic droppers or weight or any other gimmick. Until they’re 100% reliable in the field nothing else matters.” Well that’s where I am with e-bikes. Fuck your big pseudo-iPod screen, fuck saving 100g, fuck 85Nm vs 90Nm, fuck anything any of them are doing other than “this thing is reliable”. There’s a reason nobody wants to buy a used Ebike. Fix that or the bubble bursts.

What bikes/motors did you rent? What kind of problems? Did they have big mileage on those rental darts? Sucks you had to deal with that on a vacation. They could be the perfect tool to explore a new zone if they didnt have those issues

Brands will be into it. Like fazua theyre owned by porshe. Theyre just waiting for their batteries to be certified for north america. Porshe have commited to national distribution centers. I wouldnt be surprised to see brands that have sl bikes with the fazua system start offering full power emtb's in their line with the pinion system. So santa cruz, yt, transition etc

If not here's your vpp bike with more power and possible more travel. Newcone will probably be 180rear but maybe itll still have a 165 setting option as well. Theyre just waiting for the new bosch cx gen 5 frames/motor to arrive

one of the builders bought a new Norco and the motor needed repalcing after 6 trips up the area, probably 15kms, I've also heard of people logging 10,000kms. I think I still got a couple more seasons on this bike, it still runs like it did 3 yrs ago so I'm not in any hurray to buy another E-bike unless it completely shits the bed and i need to cuz i can't find another EP8 motor, I know what a Santa Cruz is, i know where th dealer is and i know SC knows where to put the pivot for the 170mm of travel but I never heard of those other brands

yeah an e-bike definatley has another layer of HW that can break down, and so the end loser has to be OK with this

I've managed to macgyver my way around breakdowns so actulay the only time it completely died was ripping the wire out between the display and the motor

Pretty much the same here. Keep it going. The bike as is covers a wide spectrum.
Hearing of a few people with pinion mgu problems. Nothing major but i think it needs a yr or 2 for me to jump on.
Even more time for that dji system. Plus the us might ban dji because of their drones and being chinese potential spies. Also first review points to not great battery management. That cancels the lower bike wieght if you need a few extra lbs of battery to get where you want to go. Also you need to keep the rpm's up for that power it has. Bosch has it dialed. Best battery management and low rpm grunt. Bluetooth mode adjust and display in the toptube means no wires to pull out as well.
Crestline is the company Aaron Gwin has stake in with his race team and some type of partial ownership deal. Lots of great things being said about the main 2 guys ,that started the company and are the chief operating ops. Major focus on customer service. Those guys go the extra mile. Kind of remind me of Keith from praxis skis and his customer care. Price isnt bad either considering.

The Crestline owners are super responsive and helpful. I was really interested in their eeb when I wanted to get rid of my Levo, but wanted to go down to something midpower. Their bike with a midpower Bosch would be sick. I'm sold on midpower - my Heckler SL is more poppy and playful than my Nomad now.
