Finger injury... should I care?
In January I crashed on a skinny at Woodlot and hurt my pinky finger. It didn't hurt bad enough not to ride the rest of the day.
It's still swollen and still hurts.. about the same as the day I hurt it...
Its fully functional and just a little annoying except if I hit it or it gets bent the wrong way...
I'm inclined to continue ignoring it but it's been like 7 months?

I'm not sure there's much that they can actually do for fingers.
That being said, I'd definitely go to the doctor to make sure it's as good as it can be.
But I live in Canada. I realize that a precautionary doctor's visit for a fucked up pinky can bankrupt people in the States.
tl;dr
Move to Canada, then get a doctor to check it out.

Finger injury... should I care?
It's worth checking out just so you know what is the prob. You will likely need to see a hand specialist to get any real options on repair

There a number of very repairable things you could have done. Stop being a pussy and go see a doctor.
Not a chiropractor or a naturopath but a real live hand specialist.

I dislocated my index finger mountain biking almost two years ago. I reduced it in the field. I got a hallway consultation from the hand specialist at work. I asked how long it would be swollen and sore, he said a year or more. We looked at it with a mini c arm to see if it was broken and it was fine. Fingers don't get better fast.
If it's working fine and there isn't any sharp pain when moving it, it's likely fine. Just needs time, a lot of time. My index is just now getting back to normal.

Fell on bike, looked down and pinky looked like a 7, hmmm, pulled it out sideways and up and down into knuckle - went to Urgent Care to have checked and road rash cleaned - they said I did a great job re-setting - still wore a splint and used putty to exercise - avoided having a crooked knuckle . . . felt a twinge of soreness for quite a while. I'd suggest getting it checked if it's crooked.

It depends on the size of your nostrils and ear canals. If the pinky is the only finger that will fit than get it looked at. Probably worth getting an xray since not better by 7 months. Probably won't make a difference. How's that for a strong opinion?

Only the knuckle is swollen so nose and ear picking are not affected.
I think I will mention it next time I go to the dr.

I wrecked my pinky a while back it hurt but still worked although kind of crooked. I saw a doctor about it many months later and he said I waited too long to have anything done about it. If I came in after the injury they could have fixed it, now I just live with a crooked finger.

I crashed on my mountain bike and had a massively swollen middle joint on one of my fingers... it was sensitive but not a big deal, and it stayed that way for a good 8-10 months before I finally stopped noticing it. Fingers can definitely take a long time to heal.

I crashed a few years ago, thought I sprained the little finger. Unless bleeding or obviously broken I usually give things a few days to a week to see if they get better before seeing a doc. Finger was feeling better but was sort of crooked relative to the other fingers, so I went and got it checked out when I got home from my trip at the end of the week. Turned out I broke the 5th metacarpal and they had me back in for surgery 630am the next morning to put a couple screws in it. No problems since... Yeah, get it checked out for sure if it's still giving you problems.

Dipped a hand too close to the ground doing mach-loony about ten years ago; bent ring and pinky fingers backwards. Couldn't type for a few months, lots of pain; I just taped the two fingers together and wore these:
Ten years on, I have full functionality, but there's a weird knot in the cartilage on my palm from my pinky finger, like a painless lump.. Probably scar tissue. Probably should have seen a doctor.

I had a coach as a kid who had a pinky that stuck out at a right angle because he broke it and never took care of it. It would always get snagged on you when you shook his hand...

So, let me summarize: go the studly route, be maimed for life, or see a QUALIFIED specialist and be able to diddle the thiccs well. into your 80s.

I've broken every finger on both hands at least once. Thumb, index and pinky fingers get in the way mostly and have been offended multiple times. Broke a bone in 2 locations and partially tore a tendon of the left thumb in March by jamming it in a toe piece that was going by me vertically. Being opposed thumb incapable sucks. It's August and it's about 70% better.
If the offending digit performs mechanically well, there is no sharp pain and everything looks reasonably aligned I forego the time and expense of professional medical help. I have kept all the braces and splints mandated by rude impacts of the past. So, if necessary, I can immobilize the damaged digit until it can play again.
If you have any loss of mobility or the digit looks more than a little askew. You'll need to get it set. If it needed pinning - you'd probably know about it by now.Last edited by Gepeto; 08-05-2018 at 03:26 PM.
