Pawn shops are your best bet. Lots and lots of old cool bikes, cheap. Also C/L.
Take cash and be prepared to haggle and start low.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

This thing is pretty dope. $495 on VT Craigslist. I'd be scared to ride it on anything other than smooth pavement though.

So 26in wheels, v or canti brakes. Steel. Tons are out there. If you were larger I'd send ya my Schwinn black chrome'd High Sierra.

^^ Yeah, no doubt but how about the Ibis Bow Ti?
The best thing about that Klein is all of the cheap knock-offs that came afterward that tried to look like it. Still see those around.
I've been looking at these:
http://www.somafab.com/bikes-frames/frames
Not "cheap" (and def not old) but about the same [ASKING] price as a lot of the used frames or bikes I've been eyeing.
I'm sure you all already thought of this but keep in mind that if you don't have all the parts ready to go, you can get a whole friggin bike from places like Bikes direct for almost the same price as the groupset alone, so in that sense, the frame costs little to nothing if you needed the parts anyway. Ride it until you find the cool frame/bike and swap the parts over. sell what's left over.
Just my 2 cents you didn't ask for. Have fun with the build!!If we're gonna wear uniforms, we should all wear somethin' different!

I duno why you would want to " build something up " when there are 15 or 20 yr old HT's out there that are still working fine, I would look for a higher end ( at the time ) mtn bike and I wouldn't do any more than swap in the tires that might work better for your app

Not mine. Just one that I had in my saved list for when a friend says they want an urban commuter.
The poster looks to live right next to a big bike shop. You could ask them if they are willing to take it over to Wheat Ridge Cyclery which does a fantastic job of packing and shipping.
