%#$#^% Phone scammers
I had just logged a support ticket via email with my company, 5 minutes later I get a call on my house phone (this is the phone a service tech from my company would call me on). The screen on my cordless phone is fucked so I can't read the caller ID. I answer the call with a "hello". The caller asks "Is this Timothy". Thinking this is in response to my support ticket I don't think much about it and answer "Yes". The caller immediately hangs up.
Now someone is probably going to use this to steal my identity and cause me a huge amount of headaches.

I always say "no, I'm his brother" which tends to throw other party off their game. From there I just mess with them for general amusement.

I never answer my cell if I don't recognize the number, but I get a lot of spam calls on the office phone and am obliged to answer. Often it's obviously spam based on the caller ID, so I answer in spanish.
Me: *Company name*
Spammer: Hello, may I please speak to the person responsible for your office cleaning?
Me: Oh, el jefe no esta aqui.
Spammer: Oh, umm, is there someone there who speaks english?
Me: Oh no, no hablamos ingles aqui.
It's good for a good chuckle every time. Sometimes they say they'll call back with a translator, but they never do.

Probably should be posted in the "things that annoy me" thread but it really annoys me that there are still potential ways to steal my identity/steal my money with a simply recording of my voice saying "Yes" to a question.

I got a text today, telling me to send my email address to register for receiving a bequest. I asked them to send me US1000 to show good faith. Waiting anxiously to hear back from them.

I got an email claiming I've been recording feeding the geese while watching online porn.
Now way that can be true because the 2 cameras on my phone are covered due to fear of that happening.

Crazy. That is EXACTLY the beginning of the plot to a Black Mirror episode: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shut_U...(Black_Mirror) / https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5709230/

Every time you answer or dismiss a spamers call the value of your number goes up on the black market. Never answer. Never dismiss. Seems to work. OTOH my wife clicked on the first google entry for "Canon Customer Support" and by the time I went to see what was going on some guy from Pakistan was inside her computer and had control of the mouse. Off to the cleaners.
A few people feel the rain. Most people just get wet.

About time to make spoofing a phone number illegal--for the carrier. I'm sure the technology exists to stop spoofing.

I got two phone calls (unanswered) just yesterday, leaving messages with a callback number, informing me that there’s a warrant out for my arrest. Fuckin’ A, I’m dangerous!
