    That Alaska life...

I've lost friends here in mountaineering incidents, shipwrecks, avis, plane crashes, helicopter crashes...Monday, Mike Soltis, a friend and colleague, was killed and eaten by a bear.
They found him today after a bear attacked and mauled a searcher, presumably in classic aggressive grizzly defense of its kill.
I say "presumably" because grizzlies will attack each other and assert dominance over a kill, and behave exactly the same.

Wow. Vibes for his family, also for the SAR member who was mauled too.

Harry has it right. His very cool family and fiance (a Lt Col in the US Army) need the vibes.

Yeah, hiking from his front door. It's really nice up there in sunny notches, and quicker to downtown ANC than Midtown ANC.

That little valley that Hiland Rd goes up (S. Fork of Eagle River) was designated a Fallout Evacuation Zone, as the mountains would protect from the blast, and the prevailing winds would deposit the fallout from the inevitable Russian first strikes on the Nike missile silos above Anchorage. The idea was for military survivors to head there...

The main drainage which Hiland Rd overlooks, Eagle River, is on the sunnier side of things and also very nice suburb, but is also a salient into bear country. The famous Crow Creek Trail ends at the CNF Eagle River Visitor's Center at the end of E.R. Road. No salmon in the river, but bears and sheep and wolves and moose are all over the mountains.
