    This just in:

Christian women who have pledged lifelong virginity as “brides of Christ” have expressed shock at a Vatican document that suggests literal virginity is not a prerequisite for their consecration.

The Vatican’s new instruction on consecrated virginity, Ecclesiae Sponsae Imago, was published earlier this month after requests from bishops who reported an increasing number of women being called to the vocation.

There are an estimated 5,000 consecrated virgins in at least 42 countries, with the largest numbers in France, Italy and Argentina.

Consecrated virgins are unmarried women who offer their physical virginity as a gift to Christ, and devote time to penance, works of mercy and prayer. Unlike nuns, they do not live in enclosed communities or wear special clothing. Most have jobs, and they provide for their own needs.

The 39-page Vatican document offers detailed guidance on the vocation, including advising up to two years’ preparation before consecration.

It says consecrated virgins “are dedicated to the Lord Jesus in virginity … They experience the spiritual fertility of an intimate relationship with him”.

The American Worldview Inventory (AWVI) 2021, an annual survey that examines the perspectives of adults aged 18 and over in the United States, found that while 57 percent of Millennials (born 1984-2002) consider themselves to be Christian, 43 percent “don’t know, care, or believe that God exists.”

Comparatively, 70 percent of Generation X (Gen X) Americans (born 1965-1983), 79 percent of Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), and 83 percent of the Builder Generation (born 1927-1945) consider themselves to be Christian, while 31, 28, and 27 percent, respectively, “don’t know, care, or believe that God exists.”

According to the survey, only 48 percent of Millennials say one should “treat others as you want them to treat you,” compared to 53 percent of Gen Xers, 81 percent of Boomers, and 90 percent of Builders.

At the same time, 38 percent of Millennials agree with the statement “you try to get even with people who have wronged you,” while 33 percent of Gen Xers, 12 percent of Boomers, and 10 percent of Builders say the same.

Wow. Put aside the Christianity stats.

I’m shocked and afraid by the last section.
    No “do unto others”?
That’s the same as karma. And kindness. You should be kind even if you’re atheist. I would hope.

Also the last one about seeking revenge. Dayum

Gen X atheistic agnostic here. Definitely believe in do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I don't need a Bible to tell me that. Unfortunately I forget to practice it 100% and have to remind myself to stop being a dick sometimes.

    Justify atheism. Please

The numbers suggest a correlation, but to what degree do the Christian/non responses track with the others? Do we really think that being kind is a Christian value? Is revenge an anti-Christian value?

Or do we just get kinder and less vengeful as we get older? I know I have….

And yet, the guy behind that survey has also found over the years:

-divorce rate amongst born-again Christians is significantly higher than that for atheist/agnostics.

-children are the most important population segment to minister to because of their spiritual teachability and developmental vulnerability

-Based on people’s reactions to a series of moral issues, Americans are comfortable legalizing activities – such as abortion, homosexuality and pornography – that they feel are immoral

-Religious teaching or values minimally affect people’s moral choices.

You didnt notice the simple correlation between age and increasing religiosity?

As people get closer to death, they start to believe more.

Ie humans are afraid of the unknown after death and therefore find more religion as they get closer to the end.

How is "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" a religious statement? Well except for the "unto"s, which sound pretty religio-speak-ish.

Is "what goes around comes around" religious? It can't be, because it's common fucking sense. But it means the exact same thing, without the "unto"s. Is "mess with the bull and you get the horns" religious?

I really think god is just going out of style with my generation. I mean, even here in the south, I don’t think I have a single friend that truly “believes”. They may go to church with their family every once in awhile but they still think the Bible and all that is bullshit.

Well, it's right in the sermon on the mount. Of course there are plenty of similar constructs in Greek & Jewish traditions, although they tend to be "don't do unto others what you don't want them to do to you". The Jesus just turned a more positive spin on it.
