Let's just remember where we are for a minute. This is the TRG. Just because his argument can't support it doesn't mean he's not saying it. Faith is a choice and if he wasn't free to make that choice we would have proof, and where would that leave us? Up shit creek without a paddle, that's where.

your story seems familiar for many boomers - raised in the religion of our parents, that religion does not see us through adulthood ;


late in his life, my father ( who had avoided religion for almost all of my life ( raised in the church of his mother, my father found Church was somewhere people argued ( and he was Much more interested in being productive - in almost any way ))
. . . late in his life, my father returned to the church of his ancestors for the comfort he found in the historic hymns ! and fellowship... ( in his eighties, he was not much interested in 'teachings' or sermons - but he found comfort in the hymns - and in the music ) ( in resident care at the end of his life, he love to sing with the staff who would sing with him ) ;

I have no answers -
my faith is thin - and I consider it important to my survival...
I have a few trusted friends. and too many experiences where trusted people, ,,, fell short of the trust that was placed in them ( in some of the instances, the trust was misplaced - it was my "fault" )

whatever works for you - keep on. Life is a one way trip -
( if you believe in reincarnation - and believe reincarnation is 'a second-chance' - I say Good luck to you ! ! ( that will not be my Afterlife... ))

oh. the one thing I can offer was recently reintroduced to me by a friend - it is from my youth ;

Nobody knows anything. That's the thing to grasp, the complete and utter lack of knowledge about everything. The absoluteness of the lack of understanding we have is perfect. The scientists very much included. Scientists can tell you their model appears to hold together given observed or calculated conditions, that's all. Whether you believe in some story, or some numbers, it's all the same.

In the final analysis, if you go all the way back, we know absolutely fucking nothing. Whether you find that terrifying or exhilarating is up to you. If you find it terrifying you can probably find a story to believe if you ask around.

Yup.

"nobody knows anything" is what creationists say. Lots of people know lots of things. Worthless trope. Western Humanity has known where the sun goes at night for around 500 years. Probably longer (the ancient Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, etc were working on before the Dark Ages in Europe took over and the Arabs kept it up). The people who use that line most are still stuck on the Earth revolving around the Sun bit.
