    Ski Chile 2018

    Vibes to the 3V.

34cm total as of 7am in Portillo.

Visibility is currently about 6ft. I can see my boots, but that’s about it. The next few days should be fun as the sun pops out and we open more terrain.

The only picture I got before the fog rolled in. Should be all time tomorrow with Roca and Condor opening. MAYBE vizcacha and caracara too. Also, hear rumors maybe lake run and more of traversia too...only rumors though. Super cold temps...highs tomorrow might stay in the single digits (Fahrenheit).

I think the heli is supposed to arrive tomorrow too. Winter is here!

Best thread going. Keep it coming fella's!

It's been 20+ years since I have skied down there. Good memories. Need some Lenas stoke! Eduardo's completely untracked is still in a top 10 runs I have ever had... Looking forward to taking Mini Comish down there some year.

If I wasn't previously excited to head down a week from today, now I definitely am.

Super C in ~2 weeks, anyone? Bueller, Bueller?

This strange front, which only dropped a total of about 3-10cm on La Parva, after it stopped snowing in Portillo, certainly did leave things cachilupi. At least for a while. It was a bitter cold day for Chile, -11C upon arrival and -7C at 2pm (2700m), with snow off and on, bright sun, fluffy clouds, and ice crystals floating around, ending up socked in and snowing heavily at lower altitudes, all the way down to curva 1. Too bad it didn't snow more, as it is needed, off-piste had a hard uneven base, and the on-piste hard old base was showing through at the end of the day on the lower runs.

He was smiling in there somewhere....

I won't be there until the 28th - any chance you'll be up there the 29th or 30th?

Any thoughts on Ski Arpa? Do they let you get after it ? Or are you sticking to pretty lame terrain if you are there for a day tour ?

The long range forecast is now predicting a greater and earlier impact of El Niño. The Chilean weather service has upped the central zone JAS forecast from below/normal to normal.

This means the range of rainfall for the Tobalaba station (near the 3V) would be 100-200 mm for the current quarter (the map incorrectly repeats Combarbala for Santiago). Rainfall to date is only 100mm (50% déficit), so if it does manage 200, things are looking up. Conclusion: 50/50 chance of an improved season in August. Could be worse....

The weirdness of the weather is reflected in this alert from today

Heavy snow in the extreme northern altiplano? And thunder showers on the coast of one of the worlds driest deserts? Well, I did meet a guy the other day that got his military ski training up in that area, so I guess it happens.

By the way, “winter” in northern Chile is Dec-March, when the moist air from the Amazon basin creeps over the Bolivian Altiplano and dumps rain, hail, lightning and snow on the divide (4,000-6,500m). Thus summer there is known as the “Bolivian Winter”, and it supplies the rivulets that carry water down to the oasis near the coast. Normally, the only time the northern coast gets any rain at all, is when El Niño is surging. Could this be a sign???

My understanding is you can go where it is good. Best to contact them and ask about conditions and terrain available before committing.

Cool terrain! Any more beta you'd be willing to share? Is the Refugio in the park in a good location to base from? Favor returned if you ever find yourself in British Columbia.

Thanks for the updates from everyone else as well. We'll be in the Chile from Aug 8-31 with no real plans - psyched!

there is a cabin located like 30 minutes lower on the road, if you want to be in the perfect spot you need to camp right where the road ends. its all owned be the parque guaiquivilo which you can contact sending a mail to parqueguaiquivilo@gmail.com or whatsapp to +56994418074, if you get snowfall at 2000 mts or lower you should score good. check it out on google earth to find the big steep stuff, its pretty obvious on satellite images

This is their website http://parqueguaiquivilo.cl/refugio-guaiquivilo, they are on an offshoot south from the Laguna del Maule road, on the eastern watershed of Cerro El Toro (3,100m). Video filmed here 36° 0'14.08"S 71° 0'31.65"W , on an intermediate mountain east of Cerro El Toro. Nice lodge. As usual, getting to the snowline, crossing rivers, etc may be extenuating, but the terrain is there!

    Beauty, thanks!

Already inquired on the refugio availability for our group, and have skied a few lines on GE.

Could work out to be a sweet loop coming back into Chile from Las Lenas area.
    Drive slow, homie.
