Don't know why, but that ski did not impress me, so much so that I remember the demo decades later. I rode Atomic Red Sleds, Rossi 4S, and Elan RC-SL/GS the same day, and they were awesome. By shitty 80's standards, of course.

I had a pair of VR 27 GS skis. I recall them as being a pretty versatile ski. The GS had metal in it (I think), so unlike the old 60s-early 70s VR 17. Lost one in a gorge at Kirkwood. Never found. Replaced by a pair of K2 GS Race. Those were fun skis.

A friend had a pair of race-stock 207 VR-17's (slalom ski) that were too much for him and I had them on permanent loan. I think they were made in '72. They turned more quickly than my 207 Rossi Strato 102's (a slalom cut) and were more stable than my 210 Strato 102's (GS cut).

The VR17's were notorious for self-destructing however. The pair I had went flat after 20 days, but oh, what a 20 days.

I skied my Dad's 1970 Lange badged Dynamics in high school...

they were played out - Flat - and I still love those skis...

when I pulled one of the toe pieces loose, I pleaded for ,,, Ahem, *new* skis ( we didn't get anything new. except school clothes. ) .

it was the only thing I ever asked for.


VR17s. and Rossi Stratos. the early torsion boxes changed skiing.

we are on different sidecuts and different profiles ( And different materials... ) now., but I think fundamentally a lot of good skis are still built on that principle.

I don't know... one ski : give me a 205 Elan RC SL (1979). Ten straight GS wins... pretty hard to go wrong.

The VR-17's I had were made a couple of years before Lange started badging them. If I recall correctly, Lange started badging them in 1972 or 1973. I may be wrong however.

Those skis and the Kneissel White Stars were definitely landmark designs (Killy vs. Karl Schranz and all that).

I've often wondered about those early days of fiberglass reinforcement, and what made the Dynamics go dead so quickly. Was it their self-destructing design that made them so good? I'm guessing that either the epoxy or the glass (or both) was breaking down, and that this process dissipated vibration. As I recall, Rossignols, Kneissels and Kastles didn't have this problem.
