I take a shot at a big buck, I was aiming for its neck, but hit it the stomach. It runs over a ridge a god couple miles, dragging 20 or 1eet of enteral behind it. We get to the next ridge, see it, I shoot again. Blew it's front let off. We run down to it. It's alive and trying to fight.. Uncle hands me a pistol says in the head, put it out of its misery/. I did it.
Then I cried. And my grandpa call me a pussy as he showed me how to gut it an cut it up to pack out of the woods
after all that, I still have to camp and hunt. next morning, same spot, we see the same little heard. My grand pa takes aim and shoot a young buck through the neck from 400 yards. the buck drops dead instantly. He makes a crack about not ruining meat. done and done.

I will never be the same.

Friend of mine got stalked for over an hour by a mountain lion while cruising timber for a logging company. Kept backing him up and screaming at him while he waved a big stick at it. Crazy story.

But still, if cougars (or grizzly bears for that matter) were really interested in attacking and eating humans, it would be happening all the time. They are not.

Speaking of wild cats, I just saw this Facebook video of two lynx in the Little Belt mountains of Montana hissing and screaming at each other. Bizarre noises!

Ugh, very very sad. There was also a petite woman who got killed a couple decades ago solo-running on the Western States trail between Foresthill and Auburn CA.

And four years ago, in the backwoods a few miles outside of Cupertino, a 6-year-old started to get dragged away with his head in the cat's mouth before adults intervened (the kid survived).

We heard reports a few years ago about a deer kill, evidently by cougar, along our suburban creek here in Belmont about a mile or so from Oracle world HQ.

They're pretty shy and stealth, mostly, but they're out there.

Only time I ever saw a mountain lion, it was what I assume to be a mother and 2 big cubs almost as big as her. Dark had fallen and I was sitting in my friend's car at the trailhead waiting for him because we kinda got separated a little. So there I am in the dark by myself and I see what I thought at first were dogs or coyotes because of how low the reflections from their eyes were (he kept a lot of shit in his car, including a flashlight). They turned away and I saw the big haunches and long tails, and let me tell you, my friend's little old Ford Escort wagon did not feel like much protection. The way they move makes other apex predators look like bumbling amateurs. It's terrifying.

The reason I saw them was because among all the shit my friend kept in his car, was quite a bit of nonperishable food. I decided to try some sardines, but it turns out that canned sardines smell wretched, so I left them on top of the car. You know how kitties love fish!

I started frantically calling my friend and when he finally dug his phone out of his pack and answered, I explained the situation and he made lots of noise on the way down. I coved his approach to the car with bear spray (also found in his car and he may have had some on him) pointed uphill where they disappeared to, safety off, ready to go.

I thought they were mostly nocturnal? I really don't want to have to worry about this!

At least I don't have have to worry about grizzlies in Missoula or the Bitterroot, but I've heard there's no shortage of mountain lions.

Lions, and wolves, and bears, oh my!
    No longer stuck.

The attack was off the North Fork. Mailbox Peak is off Middle fork. The lions that live on Mailbox hunt in Riverbend. We should have coffee. You'd be surprised.

A drive up into the Tolt Rd area is a nice family ride on a summer evening. Any car will do it if you go around the potholes. Best to go before the road gets too dusty. And the best hamburger for the $ in the valley is at Herfy's.

Do you have CWD up in that hood? Because essentially CWD is mad cow disease. And CWD affects deer, elk, moose... and as we know cougars eat a lot deer and some elk (maybe an occasional moose? I dunno). But it's not hard to believe that if a large part of your diet was infected you might get infected, is it? Actually it seems to follow directly, if perhaps not uniformly.

Yeah there's no talk of a link between CWD and cougar attacks that I've heard but on the other hand PNWBrit can't give blood in this country because the disease is transferable via diet, i.e. if you eat infected meat you can get the disease. And the disease basically rots your brain. Maybe some of the the cougars are diseased and maybe even actually crazy? It might begin to explain anomalous attacks like this. I could believe it if CWD is present.

Yeah it's a jump but not THAT big of a jump.

    hey it's a hypothesis.

    Vibes...

I always had my lions on my mind when living in CO and WA, I used to run, ride and fish solo a lot in the area where the guy got killed.

Have since moved to Chicago and do some xc skiing and MTB in northern WI and have wondered about wolves...never really considered them till I saw one right where I ski.

Winder which of the two would be the worse encounter, either way wouldn’t want to be on the losing end of either.

Only one true cougar encounter in my days, was memorable.

Right after I moved to San Diego in ‘93 a woman was killed in an area near Julian that was my main spot for mtn biking. http://articles.latimes.com/1994-12-...ion-foundation

I made a point of riding with skinny short people for a while.

Same drive train as the Mustang - short block 289; A motors made 225hp. Lots of room in the block to punch them out.

The cougar was essentially the girls version of the Mustang.

    2 cats ate some shrooms

Just one encounter with a large cat. Mtn Lion walked through our lunch break on a bluebird day of heli skiing. Pilot caught him approaching from a low ridge. 8 of us, includes the pilot, 2 guides and 5 seats, back off into a nearby tree line and the cat passes through lunch camp. Crab with bean sprout sammies and green tea didn't turn him on and he kept going. We shouldn't have settled down in his territory and he let us know it.

Cool group here at TGR...i saw the initial article online somewhere (msm?) but looked to TGR for real details. I find myself doing this quite a bit actually...

The follow up details are frightening. Saw another report a while ago about 2 mtb'ers who stood up to a big cat by standing side by side behind their bikes and threw rocks etc. They won...

i assumed that would work every time but based on follow up reports, this cat was determined. Attacked rider 1, while rider #2 ran away..this caught attn of cat, which then proceeded to chase and kill rider #2.

I know carrying a weapon such as a 45 isn't always practical, but in this case they would be alive.

Horrorific experience and horrible way to go...vibes

Is this how it went down? First person gets attacked, second person just tries to run away and ends getting killed because of that?
If so I may have to redact my whole "there is no God" thing.

Yep, that's the latest. I've been trying to keep on top. That area is a "pay to hunt on" logging area on the edge of the wilderness. It cost's big bucks so I suspect the over supply of Microsoft/Amazon millionaires are over hunting the deer and leaving the lions no choice but to supplement their diet with hikers and bikers. It's a problem due to too many guns and income inequity. Everybody knows. It's as plain as day.

I don't know about this being a horrible way to go. I just saw a report of a woman who was attacked and killed by seven(7!) Daschounds. That's like getting eaten by furry trout.

“If the cougar attacks, fight back aggressively and try to stay on your feet,”

I can't even imagine having a 100lb mtn lion running at me and trying to stay on my feet while fighting back.

I had two house cats driving across country and my wife decided to get them these harness things so we could take them out without losing them. The one cat went completely shithouse and pulled a houdini. The first thing I thought about was what a large cat could do if you were in a fight with it. Large cats are the scariest land animal imo.

Sheez, what a fucking silly speculation. This was ONE cat, possibly diseased. There are lots of cougars in there, but only one human attack. And the deer season is open only to 3-point or better bucks, i.e., <10% of the deer population, and there's plenty of other food, e.g., squirrels, voles, mice. This was a one-off, first cougar human kill in WA since the 1920s.
