That's correct in the adversarial criminal justice system, and maybe that's a place to start for some reform. Does anyone really think that is going to accomplish the "truth seeking"/justice function in cases like school shooters/mass shooters? This is not really a "who-dun-it," and I can't think of one of these school shooter cases that's different.

There are certain criminal cases that are just fucked, and the judicial system can't be expected to un-fuck them. The adversarial system doesn't do that.

Maybe the initial outrage of this case has some legs if people can see and grasp how irresponsible the gun ownership/parent angle is? But the jaded part of me says this too shall pass pretty quickly.
