He was an actual DI in the Marines before he got the role in Full Metal Jacket. He was initially hired to just be a consultant on the film, but Kubrick decided to give him the role after he put together an instructional tape where he went on an extended tirade. He was allowed to write or edit most of his dialog in the film.

It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Some say when he arrived at the pearly gates, St. Peter didn't let him in. Ermey started dressing him down and now he's at God's right hand.

SIR! REST IN PEACE DRILL SGT SIR!
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

    Only 74 years old.

So he was only 43 when Full Metal Jacket was made. Which is kind of surprising.

(I thought he'd already died a while back.)

Only? Seventy four is a fine age to die, provided, of course that one's still mobile and active (both physically and mentally).

Maybe in 1918, but I think most of us are hoping for a bit longer than that, seeing as we're two decades deep in the twenty-first century.

Well, seeing how generally worthless most people are past the age of seventy, I say dying young is a good thing.

We expect the first wave of assault troops to focus on cutting our wire soon after dark. The second wave will be reinforced with their 82mm mortars and sappers carrying satchel charges. We won't be able to contain their third wave, which will constitute the bulk of their attack, but we'll be able to call fast movers on our position. Questions?"

Butterbar: "Won't we still be here during the airstrike?"

Gunny R. Lee: "Why, that's a brilliant bygod deduction, Lieutenant. Jesus. Fucking. Christ."

CO: "Easy Gunny, he's just a kid. ..."

The only was more that I thought he was older than that... if he had still been alive... because I didn't think he was. He seemed older than 43 in FMJ.

If someone was mobile and active they'd be entitled to be bloody pissed off at popping their clogs at only 74.

    Why so dark, bro?

    My favorite Ermey memory.

We had a Private Pyle also. Couldn't do a pullup to save his ass so the DIs would have another recruit hold his ankles to assist. One day he let go of the bar and did a face plant into the ground. Smack. I cracked up and got my ass PTd for 20 minutes for laughing.
