People are dumb enough to let a wilderness ranger look inside their backpack?

People are dumb enough to think it's ok to camp without a permit in wilderness areas?

Haha, I'd like to see them accuse someone of camping in the Sierras for carrying a camp stove but no shelter - or at least no sleeping bag. That would be pretty hard core. The TH where this sign was - Horseshoe Meadows - has a reputation for being frigid at night.

The whole issue above is partly due to permits being so hard to get, so people just say F it and go anyways. What's amusing is there are a million places they could go where wilderness permits are easy to get but people all flock to the same super popular areas.

I’ve done it half a dozen times this year, no permit needed in the majority of Wilderness areas.

Yep - Colorado has a *shitload* of Wilderness Areas, and I can only think of a couple that require permits...

It is a lot easier to go over a 12K pass starting at 10K than starting from 6K, the latter with no water most of the way. Any time I've ever looked for a permit there was no problem getting one for Shepherd's pass, but I never tried it.
I wonder how the FS feels about blankets. I seem to remember that John Muir carried a blanket, some flour, matches and a pot. (There are various versions of this but for sure no sleeping bag, stove, or tent.)

I'd gladly represent pro boner the 1st person cited for this who was not overnight camping by choice without a permit.

If I lived closer I'd call the ranger HQ and tell them where I was hiking and what was in my pack and ask them to cite me.

I cracked myself up by making up this joke today: My favorite Westerosi saying is "Who died and made you King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men?"

Nerd humor at its finest. At least that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it.

^^^ Instead of being politely confrontational with the door-door evangelists, I play with their heads…

“Have you heard of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints?”
    “I have. I follow the Eight-fold Path.”
    “Huh?”
“I follow the Tibetan Buddhist Way”
    “Hmmm, I don’t know anything about Buddhism…”
“How can you possibly be out here proselytizing for your faith when you haven’t done any competitive analysis? Do your overlords not provide you any SWOT training so that you can be an effective advocate? So what if you get your own planet when you die? I get Nirvana.”

    Shuffling and mumbling

“Come back when you can put up convincing arguments that your faith is better than Buddhism or Baha’i.”

    Never had anybody come back…
