I went to high school with a guy whose rich, inherited wealth parents had gotten suckered by the Bhagwans. They basically left him in charge of himself during his senior year while they bailed on all their responsibilities (two kids) and ran off to Oregon to become enlightened. It was all very strange to the rest of us. I mean, every teenager has a story about how shitty or unfair their parents are but nobody else's parents behaved like that. That both parents would just walk away like that seemed unnatural. He lived in a huge, beautiful old money house with just his brother. That house was put up for sale shortly after we graduated and one of his friends told me his parents had given their wealth to the cult. That house probably paid for at least five fully loaded Rolls Royces. Then the whole mess collapsed into ignominy a year later. Dipshits.

I was a kid in Bend around this time. Vaguely remember the story getting coverage in the newspapers. Thx Neckdeep, was curious if anyone here knew someone who got sucked into the cult or was directly affected.

I read that Arianna Huffington was in there. No surprise.

It was huge story when he got busted here. Made the National news for a while due to the salacious nature and rolls Royce fleet confiscation. Years later, I met a lot of his followers in India. He had a compound sorta near goa in the late 80s, so inevitably you would cross paths with them in that area. The whole cult was pretty off putting and the guy was a grade A sleazeball. I had forgotten they had to give all their shit to him to join. Idiots
