Has Powder Mag been ruined by Social Justice Warriors?

For a good portion of the years I’ve been literate (going on 27 years) Powder has been one of my go to magazines. It was more high brow than Freeze (RIP) and had more meaningful content than Freeskier (very shallow content) and it created one of the greatest ski mags of all time, Axis. It was the perfect blend of irreverence, new school/freeskiing culture , trip reports, and epic photos. It was the best ski mag around.

Fast forward to today : I guess the liberal arts majors from Cornell who waited tables in the early 2010s at Goldminers Daughter decided to get real jobs and corrupt a hitherto unblemished literary institution with politicized SJW trash ? Can they even craft prose without injecting commentary about toxic masculinity, global warming, or how the homogeneous nature of the ski industry constitutes a micro aggression that perpetuates white supremacy ?? I don’t know but I’m not surprised why so many people have switched over to Unofficalnetworks for quality ski related content

Is that why I've had an inexplicable urge to divorce my wife, marry a gay man, get an abortion, and give up my guns to some buyback program somewhere? That explains a lot!

God forbid, a ski magazine runs articles about issues that are affecting the ski industry.

    Ignorance is bliss, eh?

    Hahahahah.

At first I thought this was a serious thread. And then I saw your punchline at the end there. Well-played.

ah having grown up surrounded by liberal arts majors from cornell, that pretty much is what happened
an absolute clueless type of person who usually goes onto get a doctorate with a thesis called I'm smarter than you, after spending their entire twenties and most of their thirties in school, driving a volvo wagon around, eating only organic non gmo foods, while sticking hemp based reusable tampons inside themselves, they grow their leg hair out to protest man's oppression and objectification of their sexuality, they finally select a man who is subservient to them who goes along to the farmers markets, co housing, eco village lifestyle they adore.

but scoring a bag of cornell kind bud when I was a teenager was the best, some of the dankest weed you could find in the 80's, long days sitting around flat rock and wandering the gorges tripping balls while these hippy girls waded and sunned themselves naked with their monster hairy bushes, well those are some great memories from childhood

Sounds like you spent your childhood starting at BigDaddy's pubes. I'm pretty sure there are no girls at Cornell. It's an a&m school.

I knew it was over about 10 or 12 years ago when their equipment issue came out and the pictures of the skis were bigger than the reviews. Their ski reviews used to be the bible compared to the factory rap in Ski and Skiing. That year it sounded like some of the reviews were by people who hadn't even been on the ski. It caused me to write my only letter ever to the mag. Powder was always 1/2 about the photos, but not form over substance.

Skiing powder used to have a long learning curve because of the equipment so it created a brother/sisterhood of those that could pull it off, thereby proving they had paid their dues. Now every tourist on rental fat boards is trashing the untracked. The evolution of Powder Mag is simply a reflection of the times.

While true, it's not as bad as most make it out to be. Go ski more difficult terrain and hike to lines, etc. and it's less of a problem. It just takes a little more creativity and you can leave the low hanging fruit for the tourists. 99% of them aren't willing to hike for more than a few minutes, and most won't even consider stepping out of their skis once they've gone up a lift.

Modern skis have also made skiing powder more fun even for those who could do it on skinny sticks, so there's that.

Agreed. The current situation has definitely pushed me to explore more and ski things I probably would not have found, so there are some positives. I am also thankful that the equipment is evolving to compensate for my aging body. From my travels it seems like at many areas with good side-county the long time locals are spending almost all their time outside the gates.

Yep, that's why I quit subscribing to Powder. The stories lost any of their substance and the "ski porn" was getting pretty boring.

Subscribe to Ski Journal and or The Avalanche Review for better substance.

Has Powder Mag been ruined by Social Justice Warriors?

This is the first year I haven't subscribed since I was a kid. YEP, primarily because of the SJW articles last season. I haven't even seen this seasons issues, more SJW nonsense I presume?

I haven't looked at SKI magazine since WME started sending everyone a free subscription with their movie tickets. What a crap magazine.

Bro-ing down? No, just not complaining and making the best of reality... and also not claiming to be a local either, just a regular visitor.

It’s odd to be accused of being a desk jockey and tourist hater in the same paragraph. Choose one and stick with it.

I honestly look at more pics than Powder articles, so I'm not picking up what OP is laying down.

    Maybe some examples?
