Porsche to stop production of IC-powered 718 next year.
For an auto manufacturer that makes a lot of really great decisions (and cars), this one seems incredibly daft. The 718 is such a specific niche car that absolutely no one was asking for an EV version of, much less a total replacement therefor. A 2 door, mid-engined, sportscar with a wildly successful and popular customer racing program is not what I would target and say, "you know who wants an EV?" "The same person who buys that car, that's who."

You can, and it will fix 80% of what is probably ailing it.
I've got a neighbor who gave his son a similarly conditioned Disco Series II and it sounds exactly how that seller describes his. There's clearly no compression in at least a couple cylinders and the sound of that getting pushed through the failing exhaust system is horrendous. I hope someone takes it out back and puts it out of its misery when I hear it.I still call it The Jake.

The 991.2 seems like a high-water mark for contemporary enthusiast vehicles from Porsche. ICE, manual trans, analog gauges, can still kind of see the engine.

That's always a fun discussion among P car dorks like me, with some saying the 997 was the top of the mountain, and others saying the 992.1 is it, and with the introduction of the hybrid drivetrain in the new 992.2 (GTS) it's too far departed from what it's always been (nevermind Porsche hybrids have fantastic reputations, but hey).
I just think the 911 (in non-GT-3, -2, RSR, Clubsport, etc. form) is still the world's greatest sportscar, it's just a grand tourer and the 718 filled that pure sportscar niche. I think its silly of them to expect that a buyer looking for a pure sportscar, with an engine in the middle, a manual transmission and power going to the rear axles, will never say, "oh yeah, I wish this whole experience was in an EV format" no matter how good straightline performance may be in those things.
It's stompin alright, but I'm pretty sure its just uncombusted gas and possibly a squirrel nest or two.I still call it The Jake.

Wow. My dad had that era cutlass but an automatic. When I turned 16, my 1st drive involved smoking blunts, listening to the GZA and hitting the Rev limiter around 120 or 130mph. Good times. I want GL to get it just for our entertainment.

I've only leased a car once and it was 25 years ago. Is it still a stupid financial path?

I had a '93 Grand Prix with the same engine. Let me put it to you this way, the packaging decisions that were made to fit the 3.4 in the W bodies require you to remove an axle to replace the alternator. It's a hemi, so the spark plugs are top down in the dead center of the heads so, good luck getting the rear ones out. If you fuck up the timing when replacing the belt, it needs a trip to the dealership. I'm sure that'll be easy.
However, when it's running, just like every other 60 degree GM V-6, it sounds glorious. It really comes alive around 5.5 -7K. The suspension is surprisingly sporty for a 90's GM, especially one with a transversely mounted rear leaf spring?

In today's installment of Bringatrailer is stupid, someone paid $18,000 dollars of actual money for this 358-Mile 1993 Ford Escort LX Wagon:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1993-ford-escort-2/
Which is almost as confounding as why someone would drive their Escort wagon only 358 miles over the course of 31 years.I still call it The Jake.

a ‘93 escort wagon kinda falls in the mopeds and fat chicks category… in that context the mileage is totally understandable.
fact.

My sister bought a later 90s Escort Wagon for my Dad in 2003 before we realized that he shouldn't be driving. It had around 50k. I drove it until 2011 and about 128k miles before I got sick of dealing with that rusty pos. At its best, it was cheap A to B transportation. At its worst I wanted to roll it off a cliff into very deep water. But I had more respect for the water than that. VW gave me $1100 or $1200 in trade. I was a happy camper.

My 1984 Escort wagon was both the best and worst car I've ever owned. That thing ran and ran even if I wished it would die so I could justify replacing it.

Oh, how I wished mine would die. I began to wonder if it was a curse.

Just think if you had purchased a Subaru Justy instead. You’d still be driving it.
