After my last real fire season in 2008 I had a plan I really liked. I went through a bunch of hoops to start an apprenticeship with the Operating Engineers in Salt Lake, I was going to make good money running equipment and save as much as I could. I had a house and rented the extra room to cover a lot of the mortgage. As soon as I could, I was going to buy an industrial lot in the west valley and build a pole barn. Then I would continue working and saving and use whatever money I could find to be the "we buy junk motorcycles" guy and just start buying motorcycles and shelving and selling parts online in my spare time. The idea was that eventually that could either run itself with employees while I ran equipment, or it could become the only thing.
At the time there were really only 3 places you could get used motorcycle parts in the metro area, one was really limited, the other was getting picked clean and the guy looked old and like he was probably about done with the whole thing, and the other place was a druggy scene with sketchy meth/junky guys. It seemed like a good market hole and it was exactly what I wanted to do.
The timing was just all wrong. The economy tanked in fall of 2008, the OE guy said "keep your day job because we have absolutely no work for you anywhere for more than a year"...I was like umm...don't have a day job. I couldn't find any job (applied to 500+, not one callback), sold the house, called in a favor from an old fire crew and had to leave the area to go take that job so there went the OE apprenticeship.
Honestly, since then I haven't really had that kind of clear, realistic vision of a Big Plan. I stir that alphabet soup all day long hoping for a word, but it's just kind of a jumble. I wonder if perhaps that sort of clarity of vision may just have been a function of youth.

I need to tighten up my own process, but my focus scales based on how close to now the target is. So short term goals are most important to help build confidence and foster execution. Longer term goals need to be malleable to a degree so you don't quit in a moment of disillusionment.
Forgiving myself for mistakes up to the present has taken a yuge burden off my shoulders. And as that habit has strengthened, I find it easier to make incremental progress (bc I'm my own ally instead of a critic).

Based on what wealthy people would pay for guided b/c skiing... if I added up all my days, I would be a billionaire... with a goggle tan.

Hey Bobby. Sometimes a smart salesman walks off the lot and into the office.
