As a lift mechanic this is my biggest nightmare. I tried to watch the whole thing and it made me sick. I can't imagine the sort of catastrophic failure of safeties and brakes that created this fuckshow

From what I gather, the incident was precipitated by an electricity shutoff. After which, I imagine, the lift was operating at full capacity and the weight of it broke through the brakes and safeties. Then it was just gravity doing its thing and nobody could do anything to stop it.

You'd be surprised what the human body can handle. We had two people come to the hospital yesterday that were ejected from their vehicle in a roll over at 80 mph. Both of them were pretty seriously injured but will survive to do stupid shit again.

Hard to say. There is a service brake that should have held in the event of a fully loaded stop and an emergency brake/drop dog that should have prevented this type of a rollback.

Something failed massively. Possible the main drive shaft.
