^^^^ Cougar. Your good fortune explains your lack of empathy.

Q: What is the difference between a recession an a depression?

A: A recession is when your neighbor gets laid off. A Depression is when you get laid off.

yes - they need to pay you - they are probably looking for contractors - i have seen that so many times - lay of senior staff and load up on contractors

i like business, I like big businesses, but sometimes the shit that goes down is venal, especially during down sizing

How much legacy technology do you have? That was the issue at my company. The legacy clients were not willing to change and each had custom feed. Combined it was $500 million annual revenue.

My advice is move on quickly. Quit the next job if you get a better offer. That is, if you like technology.

There aren't many people who are true self starters who have been able to compile substantial savings this era. And, my state only pays meager unemployment for 6 weeks best case scenario. After that, you're SOL. We have some savings and some 401Ks but nowhere near what would be needed to pay the mortgage for more than a year much less pay college or trade school tuition that is coming at us in 3 years.

The longer you spend out of work in tech heavy specialization, the less attractive you look to potential employers.. Anything, even pro bono stuff for friends and church or whatever is better than a big gap on your resume these days.

i'm between gigs and doing data entry, checking data, and helping users figure out their new CRM that had a botched data migration - this is definitely not going on my resume

Search for Systems Admin/VMware/Azure etc in cool towns that you would like to live in. Local government, healthcare, school districts and others in these places often have openings and no local talent.

Leaning this way for sure, just feel bad for some co-workers I really like/liked. Their job shouldn't be harder cause some exec made a $$ decision with little insight.

It's interesting that you don't place value on the skills and temperament required to do this type of work. It's not easy and ultimately someone has to do it.

As others mentioned, you really needs to have money in the bank. You never know. Having to cash in your 401K to live really sucks.

Happened to me a few years ago. I make more money now, and live much differently than I used to. I have cash on hand to keep up appearances for an extended period of time if need be

On employment gaps. Saying you are looking for the right opportunity, is an accepted response.

Damn M, sorry to hear that. You're a smart dude, you'll be ok. I'm sure there are plenty of positions available out here, maybe angle that with the wife to stay.

I hope you were at least skiing today when you got the news, beautiful out there.

Been twice and it’s a huge blow for your self esteem.
Hope you can find something even better quick.
    Good luck.
