Too nice to work on this low humids day. Drommond Cycles preview of the Overland had a best quote of “It’s going to be a blood bath with scenic views” so I went down to check it out. 40 miles w/ 4200' of grunt, two wrong turns, greasy pave' cobble, awesome veiws, several miles of freshly graded uphill, dust devil rednecks and a zebra.
And only hit the last 24 mile stretch, going to be an awesome time. Knowing the end of the course will help, so many long straight uphills, must stare at tire. Can't wait for the that free beer [1] at the end!

I did run over a grey squirrel who was running across the road, stopped 1.5' short, then said "I can make it!" and caught both wheels at 25+- mph. Looked back and it was walking, hopefully makes it.

I came about 6 inches from decapitating a squirrel yesterday. Can't really expect them to heed a ninja bike when they are oblivious to cars too.

So looking to get into MTBing. Live in MA so I do a lot of road biking as it stands

Made a pledge to a college friend that if he moved back to VT I’d get into MTBing. So he is moving back in September and, I’ll be heading up there quite a bit to bike now.

Curious as to what bike to look at. Trying to stay under $2500 after having to buy new wheels for the road bike recently. Been thinking of D2C options as my LBS only stocks Scott and Giants.

That meant I was looking at the Canyon Strive AL 6 in a M or L, Commencal Meta Trail V4.2 Origin 605b, Intense Spider Alloy Foundation, or YT Jeffsy 29 or 27 AL Comp.

However my shop offered to sell me a 2016 Scott Genius 700 LT Tuned Plus for about 2,000. It is used, owned by the former shop mechanic who rode it hard, but they say it’s mechanically in great shape just a few scratches.

What would you guys recommend? I’ll be primarily around Burlington and Stowe, but may as I get more adventurous try some DH like trails. But that’s just an idea right now.

Little above your budget but Allspeed in Portland is selling of their 2018 Santa Cruz fleet. Roughly $4700 bikes for $2900.

They got plenty, all carboners, big wheels, chubby wheels, mid size wheels

Get something in the 140-165 travel range and you'll be stoked on all the trails in those areas.

Have barely been riding this summer, but wanted to share this shot of a buddy from up Carrabasset Valley way from a trip a few weeks back.

Going backpacking in the northern Presis this weekend, can't wait to get amongst it!Name: IMG_20180816_225806_568.jpeg

I think th Scott’s within that range. Maybe 170 but I could be wrong. It’s definitely the biggest in terms of travel.

Just unsure if getting used is better than those d2c options despite the initial list price

I think the only used bike that will beat those is one that you buy from a local bike shop since it will likely come with some level of warranty. D2C warranties are tough since you usually have to mail back the bike where a demo bike from a shop may come with a manufacturers warranty as well as the bike shop's guarantee.

That's true but I think Scott's warranty policy is just for 5 years, so we're already over half that. I'll have to check with them.

That is really good from a shop. I got my 5010 used from a guy for just a wee bit more than that. I would have definitely driven to Allspeed instead and spent a couple days drinking throughout the city.

Made it Mt Peg for the first time. Very impressed with the trails and layout. Easy to navigate and sneaky vert. 12 miles and 2200' with a killer view from the top. Oh yeah, Mr. Biggins laid out a killer route!

Another 1.8" of rain between 6-midnight last night This is really getting depressing. Of course the shop hasn't even gotten my car inside yet so now it's Monday or Tuesday before I'll get it back. Rough summer...

18 NE - Go on, ride when it's wet

If you live in that area you should get yourself a cross/adventure type bike and a mtn bike. Tons of great riding in your neighborhood. Dover road riding is fun but the trails there are where it's at. Let me know when you do get a bike and I'll show you around.

I finished up a few days of cape riding, lots of fun easy singletrack. Spent most of the time at Nickerson since I could ride there but a day at Trail of Tears. Found them more similar than not, limited technical stuff but fun to blast around on. Would definitely go back.

But, why the fuck is Trail of Tears still named that? Especially given a significant indigenous people population on the cape and southern MA. Is it so hard to name something without insulting a group of people?

It's still named that because it has been for over 30 years. I haven't been there for a while but I remember a bunch of punchy climbs and stuff that just wipes you out. Think of it on a 15 or 18 speed full rigid bike from the mid 80's and trails like these made you hurt. Before mt bikes it was a moto trail so it was beat up and that much more difficult. It's not a reference to the historical TOT relating to the forced death march and shouldn't be offensive but I guess everything can be found to be offensive nowadays. According to le Rog there's also a whole network of trails in between those two (at exit 7) so those two trail networks you rode can be connected by trail rather than driving to them.

TOT is a ridiculous name for a recreation area used mostly by bougie folk with disposable income and time on their hands (like me). Always made me shake my head.

I need VO route suggestions for spectating if one of you masochists wouldn't mind texting or pm-ing me. I plan to make you all drink beer and eat donuts while on the bike...

My road bike quiver has room for an adventure bike but I'd prefer a titanium one and those are $$$$. In the future maybe. Right now it's just a Scott Addict and BMC Roadmachine.

I'm in the process of considering bikes right now, what would you recommend for travel for the area? I was on an older Scott Genius LT which could hammer down everything but would likely struggle on more technical uphills.

I have my eye on some older Transition bikes but I don't know if I can demo them before they're sold (on sale currently)

Did a huge ride yesterday in Stowe with a buddy that we’ve been scoping out for about a month. 32 miles, 4400 ft of vert connecting Adams Camp to Cady Hill to Little River. We only rode pavement for maybe 2 miles - the rest was singletrack, a few flow trails and some doubletrack. Also made decent time finishing in about 4 hrs. Temps were perfect in the mid 60s.

Finished the day off with a Foley Bros Triple Maiden Imperial IPA and my wife’s corn chowder. Good day.

That looks like an interesting ride, haven't ridden Cotton Brook in 15 years.

Leaving for Ascutney, parking at the covered bridge on Churchill rd. off 44 warming up on 106 > Baileys Mill and scoping the first half of the Overland. On the bike approx. 11:30

What about Vietnam? There are a bunch of seemingly dumb names for trail networks around New England.
