Ode to the DPS Lotus 138 (and Volant Spatula)

10”+ of wet, heavy, shmoo called for the OG mank killers. Perfect tool for the job. Spatulating is fun.

You sold me some black, bamboo sidewall 138's a long time ago.

I put dynafit bindings on them and proceeded to have some of the best backcountry ski days ever on those skis.

Nothing like them when it was really deep.

I rode mine at sugarbowl a few weeks ago after the 6’ dump. Because I’m on tele and fat skis, I often take lead on punching in traverses. I got to ski several long-ish, steepish, deep, and untracked lines.

This makes me want to throw in a set of inserts for tele bindings in mine. And get some Lynxes, and some pintech boots....

For posterity: some pics in here of the prototype Spoon, with "cleats." They never went into production AFAIK.

    What’s your preferred mount point?

I have the white top sheet, bamboo sidewall flex 2 193 with the red stripe. I’m 155 lbs, 6’. I think at 0/recommended line, I shouldn’t have any float problems. I do like to fly off stuff but it’s a big enough ski I think I’ll plenty in front and behind.

^ Believe -1 is the recommended mount for the R1 vintage.

-1 to -1.5 for white topsheet rocker 0 or rocker 1.
Three fundamentals of every extreme skier, total disregard for personal saftey, amphetamines, and lots and lots of malt liquor......-jack handy

I agree with this. I've had both rocker 0 and still have rocker 1 (which is the white with red stripe, bamboo sidewall, which was being asked about).

Made a mistake in not bringing my L138s out today. We were just doing low angle tree wiggles due to avy hazard, but it was deeeeeeep. Still had a blast but the fattys would have been more gooder.

Heard the R1 line is further back than the R0, so maybe -1.5 for R0 and -1 for R1. Or -2 for R0 and -1.5 for R1. Somewhere in there ought to do it, depending on existing mounts.

do it! I love em! A great touring ski for me. Many tele skiers do not like tail rocker because of wheelie effects. It is all good if I stay forward.

Sad. DPS without Drake is just skiing dentists.

Can’t wait until he is free to invent again.

They claim all his designs and innovation. But never mention his name. He’s dead to them. The corporate whores

Deja vue of cloudveil vs stio. Quality matters. Innovation should be rewarded.

But yeah, super strange to read the story of the products without the story of the innovation, passion, commitment, travel, inspiration.

to paraphrase Simon Sinek - all what, no why.

How touchy is the fore/aft mount point on these kinds of skis? I’m very tempted to mount to my BSL on the line, however having second thoughts of mounting a demo binder so that A) they would not ever have to be redrilled, and B) so other people could ski them

    Would that be a sacrilege?

Yo man, I’d suggest on 138’s to get low stack bindings. So Jester/Griffon demos or the ORIGINAL (not AT) tyrolia attack demos are good options.

that said, the 138 likes to have the ball of food at the center of the rocker curve. Generally (Ie around 315mm BSL), that is 84cm (from the tail, flat) for the first 3 rocker profiles, and 84.75 for the spoon 138’s.

I would trust this man's expertise & advice here.

Been rocking your old spoon 150s multiple days over the past week - definitely the right ski for current conditions

I think east or bust just picked up some spats. Not sure if the advice is the same, I never played with mount points on my pow boards.

For for posterity, spoon recommend 84 from tail.

spatulas, on or as close to the line as is reasonable.
