    It changes it big time.

The roll center is more natural and the pontoons are designed to produce lift so they can get on plane. It's no comparison to an old school bi-toon (assuming that's the nomenclature)

I think that Lowe 165 will be too small for your needs.

Was just out on a pontoon last weekend. For a slow booze cruise nothing better but I wouldn't want to be on one in rough water or trying to outrun a storm. Best way to describe them moving at speed is they plow through the water. The tritoon is a game changer because you can get it on plane and can haul ass with the right setup. If I was looking for an all in one setup I would grab a tritoon. If I was a two boat family I would get a regular pontoon and a ski boat. Click image for larger version.

Yeah I don’t expect to get too far from safety but don’t like the idea of getting too bounced around.

For your budget and purposes I’d be looking at a 19 - 21’ fiberglass boat with a windshield and a small cuddy. Arima, Trophy, Striper, Glasply, Whaler, Gradywhite, etc. You should be able find something that’s a 90s or early 00s hull with a newer 4 stroke outboard (or maybe a fresh rebuild inboard but you’ll want to really understand what you’re getting in to with one of those, especially if run in the salt…)

Aluminum boats are more expensive, and a lot of them are very flat bottomed/flat water oriented.
Plus they are lighter weight relative to a fiberglass boat. My buddy has an 18’ Thunderjet that rides like absolute dog shit in chop, whereas my old 17’ Arima rides significantly better.

If you go aluminum, go all welded, not rivet construction. And really research the hull and make sure you’re getting a deeper v hull, not a river/lake design.

Another thing to watch out for on smaller aluminum boats - they typically have floatation foam (legally required) that can get waterlogged and start causing all kinds of corrosion issues.

all boats are small when you put them in the ocean...
as someone else mentioned, go to the dock and see what people are using.
something like that alumaweld would work great, definitely error towards 20' (or bigger) if you can, it smooths out the ride and provides more room in the boat.
5 people in a small boat = nobody move (and hopefully you have enough freeboard when the ferry wake comes through), would be worth renting to get a feel for the size of things.
last, don't buy a boat from ak - we thrash on em here then head down your way to buy a new one.

So I still need a boat but I also bought one. Drove by this thing the other day and basically bought it immediately without any diligence after I went to meet the owner. Super cool guy that I will end up seeing in the local supermarket now. Really small island. We are gonna have beers and take it out together.

Not really a family rig but could be fun to air out, trim up and shoot a major rooster tail.

Almost looks like a Barefoot Warrior.
    Probably a decent footin platform.

Funny how everyone wanted the smallest wake possible in the 80’s and 90’s. Now they want the biggest!

It’s a Glastron Carlson CVX 20. Found a built in cooler under the rear seat that is going to get some mileage. I already ordered a Dokken t shirt for the maiden voyage.

Really similar story on this boat. Liked the story behind it. Dodge running great. Larry has been keeping it buttoned up for me from the beyond.

Sweet! I'll let you know when I get out that way too. I'm a frequent visitor at Blake.

It's too bad (for me, not you locals) that there's no place to tie up on Vashon.

You can tie up 3 mins from my house in Dockton/quartermaster harbor. New dock there and I think it’s even allowed overnight. Get out here

I need that boat. It takes me 15 minutes to get from my condo to my island. I bet that boat could do it in three.

    You need a hovercraft.

    Or possibly a monorail.

Forgot about that one cuz it's kind of a slog to get there against those goddam always-northerly currents in Colvos Passage. I did a south sound cruise last year and think I made like 4 knots (normal cruise 7.5-ish) even with the most favorable current conditions possible. Like 4 hours to Gig Harbor from Blake lol. But this is a good excuse to try it again. It'd be a nice little short cruise!

Yeah that’s a slog through Colvos. If you get a wild hair, it would make my day to see you out here. Good food and brown water.

Honestly, Roman Craig was my spirit animal for this ill-advised purchase. Fucking spot on.
