This guy Brian O'Neil has brought a bunch of Downeast Maine hulls to AK and finished them super nicely for gillnetting. He's working on a different project now but these boats came out super nice, tough, and very capable by all accounts. I think this is the first one he did :

Today, I felt the need for speed on the water. We topped 50 mph, saw humpbacks breaching, dolphins flying and sea turtles playing.

My old neighbor Sheman was a Monroe County Sheriff's helicopter pilot for 20 years. Had tons of cool stories about the old days in Key West, and Florida in general. I sat at a bar one night listening to all these stories about drug running, IOU notes from Mel Fisher written on cocktail napkins (that he eventually paid), Walt Disney sitting at Sherman's kitchen table one night( Sherman's mom was one of the original RE agents that Disney hired to buy up all the land in Kissimmee so no one would get suspicious), and one story about the 54 Hatteras that Sherman lived on.
He bought the 54 Hatteras from my neighbor Fred. Fred was one of the original investors in the XFL with Vince McMahon, but that is another story. Sherman bought the 54 from Fred and drove it down to Key West to start his new life as a Monroe County Sheriff's helicopter pilot. He had flown choppers in 'Nam, and somehow knew somebody who knew somebody, etc., and off he went, driving his new home to Key West.
So I am sitting at the bar listening to all these stories of Old Florida, and most of them are pretty unbelievable. Sherman starts telling me about the time he took the mayor of Key West water skiing to Havana from Key West behind his Hatteras. I was pretty skeptical that that ever happened. Then he tells me that it was him driving in the flybridge with Tom Brokaw to his left, and Jimmy Buffet to his right. I am straight up calling bullshit on this story at this point. I get home and look it up. Sure as shit, there is the photo.

I started calling him "The Most Interesting Man in the World" after that.

Ski less? wtf man. Nah just kidding, Rule number 1 on motors is find out who services them near you who is good at it and trustworthy. So start there, maybe just ask people who have them who they use and what they think of them. All modern outboards are good but they all need service so it comes down to that.

WH that is quite a story, dude is definitely interesting. Reminds me a little of the remodeling contractor we had who was a heli pilot in Vietnam and when I knew him was the world superbike champion (or something like that, maybe it was US champion) for age 60 and over. Maybe he was just the fastest old guy, not sure if it was an official class. Guy was a nut. Liked to go fast. Still flew helis and ultralights and raced road bikes at sixty-something.

On Sunday, we came across this sharp looking panga about 35 miles offshore from Puerto Madero, Mexico.

Monday we ran across it again, about 12 miles from where we originally saw it. Yesterday we saw it again, getting towed by a Mexican Navy ship.

    What's wrong with this picture?

son just called he has been on this for the past 5 months.
They cruised 18 days to Paita Peru to offload. Peruvians did not like the fish, refused delivery. They headed to Manta, Ecuador to deliver. They are anchored in the bay waiting to deliver. Had to hire some local security. Apparently it can be slightly lawless in Pacific ports. They are sitting on 2 million dollars worth of fish. Hopefully they will sell them in Manta.
Iceman the Liberty is in Cordova. IMHO not the best boat for our fishery but good looking boat.

A few years ago, fishing out of the same port but even farther out, we came across a panga that was mostly sunk, floating with just the bow sticking up from a trapped air pocket. After checking to make sure there weren't any bodies, we decided to salvage it. We put some lines on it, dragged it up on plane, bailed it out, stuck a bung into the hole where the drain plug was supposed to be, and dragged it 50 miles back to port. Upon entering the port, we ignored a call on the radio from the port captain and towed it straight back to the marina, where we were soon met by a contingent from the navy, complete with drug sniffing dogs who thoroughly checked out our new panga, our boat, and ourselves.

Nothing really bad came of it, and we were able to quickly sell the one motor that was still mounted on its transom, but the panga itself had bad juju or something, because no one wanted anything to do with it. It took more than a year, but we eventually sold it for a song to the harbor pilot. I don't think the port captain ever forgave us. He got canned a few months ago, so we don't want to get on the new one's shit list.

No motors. No crew. The first time we saw it, there wasn't even any birdshit on it. Most likely it was abandoned the night before.

When the USCG posts a video where they captured a semi-submersible drug boat, there's a pretty good chance they took that video within a 100 miles or so from where we found that panga. There was a Legend-class Coast Guard cutter tied up in port there Sunday & Monday. I don't know how they're used or why they're abandoned, but those pangas don't belong to some local artisanal fishermen.

That's a clean-looking tuna boat. It's fascinating to watch those guys make a set.

I do not think it looks that nice right now. He is taking it to a shipyard in Chile as soon as they off load. Than getting off. Curious what you are running around in to get that far off shore.

36 foot express-style sportfish. This boat:

The edge of the continental shelf is about 30 miles offshore around there, so that's pretty much our minimum run to go fishing.

i have been on ricks boat. You cant even put into words how this boat is set up for tuna fishing. 3 rigging stations. Electronics up the ass, a tackle room. You name it this boat has it. We were putting some fluke spots around nantucket into one of his machines and the screen was so big it still had Nova Scotia and flordia on the screen while viewing nantucket with plenty of detail for all. You can have a basket ball game on the deck. You can walk down into the fish hold and walk past all the rows of stainless shelves for storing tuna off shore. Makes 2000 lbs of salt removed fresh water shaved ice a day. Of course you have to move the fish from the chiller tanks before going into the hold so the ice will be 100 % efficient. I dont know about you guys but I cant stand when my chiller tank is not working properly. Its something else. Rick is a very nice guy too. He hired a naval architect to over see every lb that was installed during the build so it would be perfectly balanced. I called him one night when he was fishing in completely shit weather. The only boat on the water because the weather sucked. Im talking like 9 foot seas. I asked him if he was getting bounced around. He sends me a picture of a bottle of scotch sitting on the table not even moving.
    Seems a little like overkill.
