    iphone to poster printing...

Can someone put this into English for me?

I took a sweet shot of my daughter in waist deep snow yesterday- it was awesome skiing! It was an incredible day. We were in the Hobacks shortly after they opened.

It is a 2.2 meg photo. How big can I enlarge it without sacrificing quality?

    Thanks!

photo size is determined by pixel x pixel size, like 3000 x 4000 pixels, not data memory size.

images look OK at density ratios larger than 150dpi (dots per inch, or more correctly pixels per inch)
images look good at density ratios larger than 300dpi

    3000 pixels at 150dpi is 20"
    4000 pixels at 150dpi is 26.67"
    so, 20" x 26.67"

    3000 pixels at 300dpi is 10"
    4000 pixels at 300dpi is 13.33"
    so, 10" x 13.33"

an iphone 7 takes photos that are 12MP (mega pixel), close to that 3000x4000 example above

Actually... it was an iTouch pic. Not the best, but it's what we had:

If you're blowing it up to small poster size you can get away with less resolution because it's intended to be viewed from a distance which makes the dots / rastor less visible.

2.2 mg per shot is independent of megapixel camera class. My 14 megapixel canon shoots 2-4 megs per shot depending on zoom etc.

This pic was on the way down to the bottom of the Quad.

As we sat down on the chair, we heard the Hobacks opened. Wow.

For posters, use the estimated viewing distance to get your needed dpi. Then divide that by the pixels in your photo the way AC says and you get your max size.

An 8meg camera on board the iPod Touch 6.

What do you anticipate your viewing distance?
How do you intend to display the image? best case/worse case.

You can make 22x28 but it will be highly rasterized (Digital looking). Filters can be applied to soften the impact of the low resolution file. Based on the bit of info you've given, without the actual file, I wouldn't go much larger than 8x10 to keep the photo quality appearance. Know Anyone with Photoshop? Have the image sharpened then digitally color enhanced before you print it or have it printed.

Another thing to think about is the Apple color space. I'm not clear on the details, but if you don't upload the photos from the iphone/iwhatever to a computer with an apple program, it won't display colors correctly. Or something like that. Google or someone else here should be able to explain better.
