Where to rent a beach house in EU next summer?

Preferably off the beaten path but not so out there that we couldn’t roll a little sightseeing/kultcha intonit.

Is Portugal in the EU? Try the Azores. Apparently Portuguese Gov. is actually subsidizing tourism there as part of a economic development effort. Supposed to be pretty cool, but I've never been.

For the whole summer or a month or so? If you like the modern aesthetic I'd check into this. Ibiza.

Mallorca, Menorca? Maybe too off the beaten path for you. I worked with a guy who lived in Barcelona and he loved Menorca. Pics looked nice. He didn't tell me if they make you poop with your hat on.

For me, I think our next EU beach vacation may be Split, Croatia and nearby, maybe rent one of those boats. https://www.sail-croatia.com/ship-types/ensuite

Why? That attitude would prolly rule out all those mediterranean islands then.
Windsurf out of Bodrum, Turkey, and rent one of those boats.

Not EU but you fly into the EU (Cyprus) , take a taxi across the border into North Cyprus and get a rental car. Stay in a shack on Golden Sands Beach.

Cadaques is about 2 hours from Barcelona, small but very relaxing. Dali use to party and shag ladies there. You better work your banana hammock game if you want any real street cred.

If you want the possibility of sightseeing in Italy, maybe Rimini and that whole strip of middle class beach scene on the Adriatic in pretty much northern Italy. From what I understand, the beach scene is a major league Italian family scene who have been coming for years, very regimented and not exotic at all. Think the Jersey Shore with much better food and having to rent a spot n a grid on the beach with umbrella. Now, as far as the cultural thing, Ravenna is accessible by train, and that's definitely worth spending a day or two exploring. I was just there. Fifth century glass mosaic interiors is its claim to fame, but the street scene and food is nice. Mellow, off the whole tourist track, a little. North of that is Venice, nuf said, but a car rental may be needed. Train may be difficult. Not expensive, if you keep it small. Padua is northwest, not far, an absolute must for at least a day trip. Again, rent a car. San Marino is up in the hills over the beach towns. A seperate country! Never been, but I'll bet it's a cool day trip with views.
If you road bike, that beach area is home to three or four road bike hotels with upscale rentals and guiding. Good values. They bike up to San Marino.

Then there's Viareggio over on the Med side in the north. Again, big time middle and upper middle class beach resorts. Very established traditions. But, close by is both Lucca and Pisa, both more than worth a day trip. Awesome food in that region. If you're willing to travel a little further, Florence isn't too far. Tuscany is awesome.

Best inside stuff I've read about summer middle class Italian beach culture is in the books of Tim Parks, a Brit who married into an Italian family, had a few kids, and works in Milan and writes from home. He spends every summer in Rimini. Best book is Italian Neighbors.
