    Please get a flu vaccine

    Or your own.

Yes--the vaccine is not close to 100% effective but it reduces the severity and even if it only protects 30% that significantly reduces the flu burden in the community and the number of people who are exposed to the virus.

Fortunately, the federal government is appropriating a huge amount of money to develop a universal, life-long vaccine. (Just kidding about that.)

Word on the street around here is that it's only 10% effective this year.
    Nooo thanks.

I'm normally all about the flu shot, but they missed the mark badly this year. It's been over 4 weeks since I got the flu (and I got the shot), and I'm still not back to 100%.

Wasn't going to put in the effort originally, but my workplace offered them on-site and at no cost so I couldn't really argue against it.

Same here, gets me every time I sit down for a shot. But every time I leave there thinking "man that was easy, what was I worried about?"

^^ When my doc said "sorry, you've got the flu even though you got the shot" he also said that early reports were that this year's shot were only 10-30% effective.

I didn't get the vaccine and I haven't gotten the flu. So with n=2 the vaccine either works or it doesn't.

I wonder how many of the folks saying they won't get a flu shot because it's only 10-30% effective (estimates vary this year), also use an avalanche beacon and/or airbag every time they go into the BC? Those devices also have low effectiveness rates, but the reasoning is that if they might save your bacon then you use them even though they're not guaranteed effective. Same logic with the flu shot, but even more so - it's cheap or free and has minimal side effects so the marginal cost of it is very low, making it worthwhile even if it has a low effectiveness rate (not to mention that even if it's not effective in preventing your flu, it may make it milder or shorten the duration).

Seems like a pretty simple risk-reward analysis to me. If I can pay very little, with very little risk of negative effects, in order to have a 10-30% better chance of avoiding the flu, I'll take it.

Stay away from people, don't shake hands and wash your hands a lot. Seems to work for me. Love working from home.

So what if it's not as effective this year? If there's even some chance of it helping then what's the harm?

I was lazy and didn't get around to it yet... long story short, I just lost 7 pounds in 4-5 days. One of the worst flu strains I've ever had. I should feel nice and light on my skis later this week, though, so I have that going for me I guess.
