My Cat Sister
Sister was a stray.
She was living on a roof with her parents and two siblings next to my garage apartment in Houston.
I fed them and spayed 3 female cats.
While I took care of 3 cats in my apartment after the surgery, I guess that's when Sister decided she wants to be a house cat.
After the release back to the roof, she started scratching my door and calling me from outside.
When I open the door, she'll pop in and stayed longer and longer.
One day she refused to leave.
After 8 years in Houston, we moved to Minneapolis together.
After 2 years in Minneapolis, we moved to New York together.
She's been my rock and home when I don't have any family member in United States.
Because of her I never was alone and be able to pull through a lot of things.
She truly was my family for 17 years and 9 months.
She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism which lead to heart and kidney failure.
She was fighting like a champion but her conditions and medications were effecting against each other.
She stopped eating, couldn’t go to bathroom and slept most days last couple weeks.
We took her in to tab her chest fluid and enema, but the conditions weren’t improving as much as we hoped for.
It was time to let her go.
She passed away in my arms January 4th 11:50am.
She was beautiful til the end and I was the last thing she saw before she departed.
She was smart, gentle, loving cat.
In 18 years, I never saw her hissing or attacking anyone.
She never even ruined any furniture.
She loved me, my boyfriend, sun, warm air, treats, catnip, money, heating pad, midnight runs, play under comforter, feather catch, cardboard box, paper tissue... etc.
Most of all, she loved being around us.
She was the happiest cat when all of us were together in the living room or sleeping in the bedroom.
She was truly the best cat ever.

I don't like cats. But I really like your cat. I'm so sorry Nutmeg, she sounded like an amazing animal and friend. She was lucky to have you. Take care.

My Cat Sister
We should all be so lucky to have a companion like your cat.
Also confirms my believe that the best animals are the ones that choose us.
Sorry for your loss.

This seems to be true for cats. Ours just decided that we were going to be her people and never left. She was also a great cat in that she never scratched or hissed or clawed the furniture or peed on anything. She even put up with the addition of two dogs - although she did have to put the first dog in his place a few times at the beginning. She was truly friends with the second.
Sorry for your loss. Cats really can be great little buddies.

My Cat Sister
She departed on the day bomb cyclone hit New York.
The road we travel to get to her was nearly impossible.
After we came home, we geared up in ski clothes and went out to celebrate her life.
We walked miles in snow, cried, shared stories about her, beer and shot to warm up and repeat all over again.
She even knew when was the best day for her to leave us behind.

My Cat Sister
Thank you, everyone.
It took me a week to even be able to talk about her.
My heart aches and it feels like there’s a big hole in my chest.
I never had an anxiety attack nor been depressed, but I feel like I’m experiencing all that this time.
I still laugh when it’s funny, eat and drink.
But I haven’t been able to focus on work when I have so much to do both day job and freelancing.
I would normally run my hearts out and tire myself to sleep, but my right hip bummed on me few weeks ago and haven’t been able to run.
I tried yoga the other day and end up crying during the class.
I can’t be trusted in public right now.
The support system we got was amazing.
Our regular vet and staff always made a spot for Sister to come in during their busy schedule.
(she was their favorite cat patient for being so gentle)
Vet call me to comfort me when Sister passed away at a different hospital and the staff sent us a card with messages.
Sister’s cardiologist and ER doctors were amazing as well.
Also the staffs at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists were unbelievable.
(one of them end up crying with me)
They also loved Sister.
I got her a pet insurance 5 years ago.
If I had to let her go, financial reason wasn’t going to be a decision maker.
I paid $50 a month past 5 years.
Her medical bills past 8 months were roughly $18,000.
Minus consultation fees, deductible ($500 per condition) and medical boarding, they covered 90% everything else including medications.
I probably end up paying about $5,000, but the insurance allowed her options were unlimited.
The insurance never gave us hard time with the claims and process was fast and easy.
Once approved, the reimbursement was in my account next day.
Her last treatments were about $2,200 and they reimbursed $1,600.
If you don’t have a pet insurance, please get one for your dog or cat and for your bank account.
If there something could’ve been done, but you couldn’t provide because of money, it’s going to weigh on you.
We had Trupanion and it is a great pet insurance company.
I’ll recommend it to anyone.

Great read, great love, sorry for your loss. Reminds me of Molly my boxer from a few years ago.
