    Looked at Dana plateau yesterday.

There is snow down low, but only a foot or so, probably gone on a week.

    The chutes are well covered.
Looks like powerhouse is doable, some avie debris down low.

Also tried to ski incredible hulk, but turned around on the face below the couloir.

Compression test, ect and rutschblock tests all failed really easily (2 taps, and just stepping lightly).

There was snow from the campground, Creek crossing doable but interesting.

Skiing down on the forest was an exercise in avoiding obstacles.

What's up doc, did you go to the Eastside last week?
    How was it?

Thinking of skiing ripper on Dana plateau, and wondering how the conditions are.

Any others that skied around there?

    Thanks in advance.

    Mammoth Crest Saturday 3/30/18

Spring Conditions after 10 am. Looked at Tioga Pass Friday evening. Thin at the bottom of Powerhouse road. VBowl was burnt out about halfway up.

    Onion Valley was nice sunday.

Probably too late for this to be of much good, but...

I didn't make it down last Wed/Thurs but I did ski Fri-Sun on the east side. Friday we skied a N facing line off Basin. Snow was chalky wind board. Not epic but good snow for steep skiing. It was at least consistent and it was edgeable. Sat & Sunday we skied Williamson, N fork of Bairs Creek. Variable aspects, but mostly eastish. Snow on the way down was a mixture of almost corn, chalky wind board, and some good corn here and there down low. It hadn't totally transitioned to corn yet on most aspects up high. Direct S was corning up well though.

Coverage from Mammoth north looked pretty damn good. I was pleasantly surprised. Not as great south of Rock Creek but still enough snow up high to make it worthwhile if you ask me. Beyond the eastern slope (the crest and west) coverage looked pretty good actually. If you get deeper it should be fine.

The plateau looked pretty good. Should be fun when the pass opens.

Pics to come when I get around to it.

I skied ripper off the plateau today, a bit firm higher up, good everywhere else.

It was in the shade by 2 or a bit earlier.

Thanks for the beta Doc, Rod, Good job on your lines too.
Doc, what's your guess at the snowline elevation was near Bigpine? I'm guessing Tinemaha's out (or will be with the rain soon), but we were thinking of the Palisades maybe next week. What level did ya skin from at williamson?

    thanks

I would guess the snow line around Big Pine to be about 8500' or so. We skinned just below 9K on Williamson, 8800' based upon my watch. Yeah, the front country stuff like Tinemaha probably isn't worth it with the upcoming rain. I think the Palisades would be worth it. At least there's a trail to walk until snow line. I'd be interested to hear how it is back there, I would like to get back there soon myself.

Nice job on Ripper Rod, that's a great line.

Anyone around these parts ever ski Deerhorn couloir? I'm looking to head out there in a couple weeks. Will be interesting to see what this upcoming rain/snow does to Onion Valley area.

Last Friday AKbruin and I skied a chute on the N side of Basin Mountain. Cool terrain back there. The line was about 2600 feet long. It had an interesting narrow choke about 1/3 of the way up. Snow was chalky windboard. Not epic but it was soft enough to get an edge in and it was consistent. Good snow for steep skiing. Better than I was expecting.

Saturday we decided to give Williamson a go via the N Fork of Bairs Creek. It was on both of our radars and a seeing a friend do it a few days before convinced us it was doable. We decided to do it as an overnight, which turned out to be a good decision. The approach is fucking awful, there's no other way to put it. We both anticipated it would suck, but it exceeded our expectations.

    Starting out:

We got a late start at about 11 am after sleeping in (does 7 am count as sleeping in?), a nice breakfast, and packing up. The hike up to the first notch (well described in the guidebook) was hot but not that bad. We took our time, figuring we had more than enough daylight. Just before the notch we did some 3rd class sidehilling which kinda sucked, but we got to the notch without much trouble. We took a break here.

AKbruin at the notch. If the snow looks really far away, it's because it is.

From here you do a downward traverse to the creek, which was quite loose and sandy. Ultimately you end at the creek. The guidebook says you might be able to skin here (in a better snow year) but we were nowhere near snow. We hiked up the creek a ways, climbing up and around 1 waterfall on a loose side hill. After a while the creek forks and 1 fork heads steeply up and left. Here's where we made a mistake. We decided to go up and looker's left of this creek, which was the wrong move. Looker's right is the way. This pic depicts the correct route in our conditions:

After a while we realized we needed to traverse right to get on track. A tedious traverse towards the creek led us to steep rock walls seemingly everywhere. Our morale hit a low point here. We thought we were totally cliffed out. To turn around would realistically mean bailing. We didn't have the time nor the energy to do an extra 1000 feet of steep, dry hiking with full packs. We considered bailing, but I convinced AKbruin to do a slightly sketchy steep down climb into the creek. I scouted it out without my pack and it seemed just reasonable enough to attempt. We went for it and made it. We climbed out the other side of the creek onto the correct dry ridge. Another 800 feet or so of elevation gain led us to snow that we could skin on.

    Steep, loose hiking:

Almost to snow. The arrow depicts the aforementioned notch where we did our descent to the creek.

Skinning was a huge relief after so much hiking with skis and boots on our backs. We finally made it to our camp after about 7 hours.

    Finally skinning:

We set up camp, melted water, ate dinner, and crashed.

The next day went smoothly. We both agreed climbing and skiing the peak would be a piece of cake compared to the approach. We left camp at about 5:15 am and hit the summit shortly before 11 am, and we weren't hustling too much. The summit views were fucking outstanding, maybe the best I've seen in the Sierra so far. Skiing was a mixture of corn, almost corn, and chalky windboard. It was pretty good overall.

    Skinning early on:

We thought we could keep the crampons on and walk, but we started punching through the thin melt-freeze crust, so we switched back to skins:

Summit views, as mentioned earlier, were truly special. You can see Whitney, the Kaweahs, the Great Western Divide, the Kings/Kern Divide, and the Palisades in the distance. Tyndall was front and center.

Eastside Conditions/ Trip Report Thread 2018

The hike back to the car wasn't as bad as the hike in, but it still wasn't pleasant. The Burger Barn in Bishop was a well deserved treat after ticking a big objective.

Sweet adventure! Can’t wait til I have a chance to get to the east side; hopefully there will still be snow. Maybe not likely.
