Meh... not bad. Been cold/snowy/icy/grey here with scattered power outages but it's a new year and the days are getting longer so there is a proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.

Skiing should be good in Maine once it breaks zero. Like, Monday.
Tommorow sounds just awful brutal on any lift. If they're running.

was a bit windy in the Columbia River Gorge yesterday:

Strong winds are causing a problem for high-profile vehicles on the western side of Oregon.
Deputies from Multnomah Sheriff's Office and Gresham Fire just responded to a cement truck that was blown over by a gust of wind.
It rolled completely over and through the Troutdale Airport fence. Officials say the driver was taken to a hospital in the area for minor injuries.

    Cool maps, scotty.

Winds seem pretty moderate so far today. Of course tomorrow is another matter.

I just spoke to a guy in SC who said his vacation from NH was ruined by 8" of snow on the ground.

Actually... the weather guy on the national news covered that last night. He said he preferred what he called "the proper name" (bombogenesis) so I went with that but you know... tomato, tomahto - it all gets you to the same place:

The word bombogenesis comes from combining "bomb" and "cyclogenesis," or meteorology speak for storm formation. Technically speaking, a storm undergoes bombogenesis when it's central low pressure drops at least 24 millibars in 24 hours, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). (A millibar is a unit of pressure that essentially measures the weight of the atmosphere overhead. Typical sea-level pressure is about 1,010 millibars.)

    Bombogenesis: What's a 'Bomb Cyclone'?

I am starting to see more stories on this.

No talk yet about ships in distress but that must also be happening.

The cold plus mass power outages will end up being the loss leader.

Oh, and, let's not forget billions of dollars of reclaimed beaches scoured away into the Atlantic ocean.

Wow, I don't know that I've ever seen a concrete mixer on its side. It had to have been empty since they're so heavy. If full, I don't think there's any wind that could topple one. Even empty, they're heavy and not particularly prone to having a sail effect. Any idea what the wind speeds were as that would take a lot.

    LOL Cliff!

Some edgy meteorologists sometimes call the process bombogenesis....but you won't find such loose talk in this blog.

'Bomb cyclone' forms as flood threat sparks 'LIFE & DEATH' warning

(CNN)A powerful nor'easter morphed into a "bomb cyclone" Friday as it hammered the East Coast with a ferocious mix of howling winds, drenching rain, some snow and surging waves.

"Take this storm seriously!" the National Weather Service in Boston warned via Twitter. "This is a LIFE & DEATH situation for those living along the coast, especially those ocean-exposed shorelines."

The storm -- with about 80 million people in its path, including more than 22 million people under a coastal flood warning -- officially "bombed out" late Friday morning when it underwent bombogenesis, signaled by an extreme drop in atmospheric pressure.
