Zinke is not a flyfisher. He pretends to be one for photo ops.

Flyfishing is a precursor to running for public office.

Depends, does it drop off straight off shore, or does it take a while to get to that depth?
Looks like a photo op to me, but I bet you could get something to bite.
If he were in a boat, it would be funnier.

Mcdonald lake fly fishes ok. It used to be an amazing bull trout fishery before they planted it with lakers. Now it's pretty much a laker fishery, which means fishing deep. The evening can be awesome dry fly fishing for cutties though.

OK, DD, you can fish for basically any fish in salt or fresh with a fly rod. The limit really is the size of the fish. 200 pounds is probably about the max. The largest/strongest fly rod is a 15 weight, and it's about as stiff as a broomstick. After that the "fly" becomes so big and heavy that a fly cast becomes impractical.

So... my question is: Why do these asshole non-outdoorsy politicians even bother with a picture like this? Fly-fishers can see right-off he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing, casual observers probably can tell it's staged, and the supporters are already on board. It seems to work against the goal. When Obama went fly fishing, he admitted he hadn't done it, got a guide to show him, and was a good sport about it. If you had half a brain, that makes some sense.

    These pics? WTF?

Dude's an asshat for sure. But rest assured, DD, the best fly fishing I've ever had was in Lake Elizabeth, 14 miles north of Many Glacier through the Ptarmigan Tunnel. That's in the northeast corner of the park. They were so hungry they were taking the fly on the fly in the air a foot above the water.

I've only urban fished, once deep sea and once lake Mille lacs (which was dope)

I guess fly fishing is growing in popularity

I wonder what resources they want in glacier park?
