Board Games
One of our favorite Christmas memories is going to a friend's house several years ago and playing Cards Against Humanity for the first time. The whole family laughed together for hours.
So this year I thought I would sneak a new game into the family stocking. What's new? Our kids are old enough to handle the NSFW type games like CAH, but that's not necessary for a good time. I've heard about Exploding Kittens and Escape - The Curse of the Temple. Should I be looking at others?

There are so many of these new-school board games these days. It's pretty great, though I'm not well-versed in them.
I'm a fan of Ticket to Ride. It's a quick one to pick up for new players and almost always a lot of fun. It's also good with as few as 2 players.

Off for the week?
Disturbed Friends is supposed to be similar to CAH and would be something new. Also, Exploding Kittens. I think there are both NSFW and SFW versions.

Our crew has been enjoying blokus since one of the kids got it as a gift last Christmas.

Settlers of Catan. Risk meets Monopoly but only takes an hour.
Apples to Apples is family friendly version of CAH. I actually prefer it to Cards Against.

I see they turned Oregon Trail into a board game.
Not sure if it’s as fun when not played on a Commodore 64.I still call it The Jake.

Yup, only trick is that it really plays best with 4 people. If you don't regularly have 4 people who will play then it probably won't see as much use.

I picked up this for Christmas this year:
Pickles to Penguins Family Game
Imagination Pickles to Penguins Board Game, the totally new and hilarious party game where you need a fast hand, mind and mouth if you’re going to win. Take a deep breath and let the action and chaos begin. Two cards are turned over and placed alongside the center deck. These are the cards which all players will play to. Players frantically place cards from their own deck on top of either card, but they must say out loud an aspect of commonality between their card and the card in the center. For example: A train picture on a airplane picture “Modes of transport.” The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the game. 6 and above.
The frantic party game where you link the pictures to win. Link the pictures as quickly as you can, but remember the other players are trying to beat you to it! Don't be too hasty though or you may have to pay a penalty. There are hundreds of pictures, but can you link them together?“When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something." Rep. John Lewis

In Biloxi once saw a casino with the slot machines you could swipe with your credit cards, and a bankrupsy attorney set up next door. I thought hat would be a pretty good game.

We have had a LOT of fun with both Catan and Ticket to Ride. The card game that always sees the most action is Dutch Blitz. That game can be so much fun!

Wrapping around 3 years later. Exploding Kittens was a huge disappointment. We played Dutch Blitz a bit that Xmas but it never really caught on for us.
Settlers of Catan for this year or is there a new choice to consider?

What do you Meme is a family favorite.
I recently got a pun game that looks like it has potential, but we have to dig in and get the kids used to it.
Looking at one of those month by month subscription Catch a Killer games as a family present this year.

My five year old and eight year old enjoy Labyrinth. Catan has a big following amongst our teenaged cousins. I've been itching to try Axis and Allies...

Catan and Ticket to Ride are massive classics and great for family.
We've begun to play a good bit of Magic the Gathering during quarantine. And have recently begun Gloomhaven -- which has to be the least family-friendly board game (from a play dynamics perspective) I've ever experienced.

Catan is aight. I'd like some of the expansion packs. There's a card game version of Catan that's almost as much fun. It's like snorkeling vs scuba. The former takes a lot less equipment and time and is pretty rewarding.

Played this game with my sons girlfriends parents, (very conservative from MT) a few weeks ago when they visited.
Secret Hitler
In Secret Hitler, players assume the roles of liberals and fascists in the Reichstag of the Weimar Republic, with one player becoming Hitler. To win the game, both parties are set to competitively enact liberal and fascist policies, respectively, or complete a secondary objective directly involving Hitler.

We used to play bananagrams with the family, but it's no fun playing with two sons who have memorized the scrabble dictionary. I refuse to play any game I can't win.
