I can't claim I came up with that. It's a variation on one told to me by an anglophone from Montreal, a friend of my wife from when they were kids in Verdun and Westmont. The friend moved to Yellowknife for a bunch of years including when the NWT was split.

That's a sure thing to happen now.

If according to the OP funds are no concern, then south-eastern Switzerland (Ticino) for sure. Highest living standard, low crime rate, Mediterranean vibe in summer with great outdoor opportunities and great skiing close by in winter. And.... Italy next door....you all know what that means.

If funds come into play then the place I got residential status already and chasing for citizenship of - (eastern) Slovakia. Cool vibe, (yet) inexpensive, friendly people, tons of outdoor opportunities (biking, climbing etc.) in summer and decent skiing in winter. Beautiful and great place to live, love it.

Oh, it's there. I worked for a number of PQ companies in the ski industry and the undercurrent of separatist sentiment is fairly strong. It could be the "distinct society" where they still want to have the rest of Canada pay for all of their social programs but maybe I'm wrong.

Timely bump. Did you know, US citizens who renounce citizenship still qualify for Social Security payments so long as they qualified for Social Security as a US citizen. There are country-specific stipulations but former citizens still generally get retirement. While the program is funded at least.

Funny you should say that, as the wife agrees that Switzerland is the spot for us in Yurp. Canada is the path of least resistance and lots of family, so I am certain BC is where we end up in 2020.
