    Well that was stupid...

In taking the toe bail off my BD crampons I put a hole in hand. Like a seasoned idiot.

    Surprisingly not too bad...

Off to get stitches I feel like I'll regret it if I don't.

Luckily I've got some good insurance. $100 copay.

Can't wait for the day that the US gives out free medical insurance. Hopefully in my lifetime.

Yeah that’s not an ER visit for me.

They put in 3 sutures. Definitely didn't need an ER visit but it's nice to get it sewn up.

Hopefully they got it truly cleaned out, since a deep puncture with such a narrow diameter is often problematic, needing to be left open for drainage. Don't supposed you sterilized your pon before poking yerself .....?

Just reviewed original post: looks like you went pretty deep, but maybe not??

It's pretty tough to properly irrigate a wound like that adequately at home unless you have all the stuff.
(I was going to say that you can't hurt anything by irrigating too much; then I remembered Abu Graib) Sutures less important but that's a tough area to heal because the tissues move a lot--the sutures will help.

Yeah probably went close to an inch deep. Luckily I missed every tendon. They cleaned it with liter and put me on antibiotics. Wouldn't be too hard to do solo if you had distilled water. Could then close it up with med-grade super glue instead of stitches.

If you are going to irrigate a wound at home, no need for distilled water. It's not any more sterile than normal water. You could filter or treat tap water if you wanted to be extra careful but the main thing is volume--the solution to pollution is dilution, as they say. The problem with a wound that narrow and deep, particularly in that area with loose skin, is that after suturing, there is a dead space where blood or serum can collect and become infected. If I were going to treat something like that at home I would leave it open. The risk of infection is a lot less if the blood and serum can drain out. Sutures aren't used to prevent infection. They're used to help a wound heal faster and with less scarring. In contaminated wounds surgeons routinely leave incisions open (sometimes we close them after 5 days if they look good.)

That makes a lot of sense. In that case supergluing it would probably hurt the chances of getting an infection. After having this done, I was thinking I would love to take WFR, Wilderness EMT, etc. Suturing things like what I did to myself doesn't seem overly difficult and it would be nice to do it at home, but maybe I'm wrong.
