My go-to food setup: Chai tea in a thermos, sliced apples to eat during transitions, some trail mix in easy access pockets for the way up.

I like this idea. What do you use for a container if you make it at home?

1 piece per lap/hour. Does wonders for thc-induced cotton mouth, as well.

about $2.30/bar, 600 (or multiple clif bars worth) of creamy calories, 475 of which are fat. Smoothest, non-bitter dark chocolate I've had. Minimal sugar.

I Grab a fist full of Landjagers (good snacks for the dog too) and some h20, I'm also slow and broken so not setting any land speed records. GORP is gross and Cliff bars don't taste that great to me

Also difficult to beat a sausage egg mcmuffin for lunch. Although plain PB&J sandwich works pretty dam well too.

Thermos of green tea and honey.

So, after experimenting with the kids Halloween candy -

Tootsie Rolls - left in an outside pouch (I have a pouch on the waist band of my pack) . They freeze up and the Halloween treat sized versions are amazing to just pop in your mouth before you head back up after a transition at the bottom.

Sooo tasty and melt, slowly, in your mouth delicious.

As for nutrition.. um welll.. did I mention the tasty part?

Same strategies for MTB long climbs and skintracks.

Figs. Black Mission if you like that rum/whiskey angle, Calmyrna if you love your Fig Newtons.
    Ginger chews.
    Clif shot blocks.
Clif bars -- if I drink lots of water with them, and chew them up rather than swallow them in chunks, they work better. If I wolf them down in 4 bites... and I'm stingy on the water... not so much.
Simple brown rice syrup in a little squeeze flask also works, and you can add salts & flavors if you like.

Ah, the mention of figs and brown rice syrup reminds me of another good one: homemade date bars! So much for better than a Clif bar.

Buy whole pitted dates in the bulk section, with a pile of almonds, cashews, craisins, whole oats, maybe some chocolate. In the blender, blend roughly equal parts dates and nuts, adding the other stuff to suit. Adjust oat content to control moisture (nut oils). Scrape onto wax paper, flatten into a sheet, cut into bars. Boom

Landjaeger + Snickers + Shot Bloks (or whatever) = my ideal touring fuel. Add bacon mcmuffin or breakfast burrito for ideal lunch if needed. For longer spring/summer tours I used to be all about #summitkippers but I hate having to deal with the oily tin.

It usually ends up being PB&J but leftover pizza or breakfast burritos are in the mix too. Bring real food and your friends will be jealous when they're gnawing on cold Clif bars.

depends on my goals, planned speed, and time out. lots of water and some peanuts, cashews, or nuts, along with a just-in-case caffeine gu in my little emergency kit. longer outings, i have a few sandwiches, either PB&H or leftovers inserted into a grill cheese. sausage sounds good too. high cocoa chocolate. chocolate covered espresso beans. those rice cakes before using sticky rice, bacon, and eggs before, too. yum! i just came upon some yummy ganj' honey. i may start putting that in a thermos with tea for the drive to the trailheads.

Exactly what I'm doing with my tahini, honey sea salt concoction.

The only down side (for me) with almond butter (which I love) is that the organic stuff breaks the bank.

Thanks for the tip. I have some old Gerry tubes which need replacement.

Damn! I forgot about making bars, mostly due to laziness. Thanks for putting it out there!

I love a mix of fuels which create a time release - a big, protein breakfast along with some portable fat/protein/sugar through the day. Helps me stay warm, too.

Back when I ate bread and legumes, I'd use raisins with a touch of jelly to help it slide down. Did I just tee one up for someone ;-)

I used to like the Cliff Blocks a lot, but then I realized they're mainly just fruit snacks. So now I just bring fruit snacks + real food. I've also traded cliff bars for a full sized snickers.

How has no one said bacon. A tupperware or sandwich bag will last most of a day depending on how long I'm out.

I've made bars like Norseman, and folded in bacon bits from well-cooked bacon. Very tasty. And there is always a ration or two in a separate bag and pocket for the search hounds
