killington's disastrous hosting of WC ski races

I guess it was so bad last year that they're back at it (I mean, according to the board it was going to result in shame and humiliation for the ski challenged state of VT, which clearly has no business hosting ski races, ever).

Kmart passed snow control today--about a week until racing starts! I have no interest in being at the shitshow myself, but on TV last year it looked great. Mikaela FTW in both events...

The shitshow wasn't that bad last year.

I mean, the lines for bathroom were long. (protip: don't use them!) and they Did run out of beer but otherwise great times; Bring your muck kickers and enjoy

    Ran. Out. Of beer.

Was unaware of that, and that could indicate Benny's predictions of ignominy were right. Pretty poor form even by the lowly standards of Kmart.

Is there any natural snow or is it a white strip of manmade?

Someone else could say for sure, but my money is on negligible to no natural right now. But I am sure they did the same thing to Superstar as last year--have never seen so many snow guns in one place. More guns per square foot of trail by a factor of three or four, probably, than anything I've ever seen. Was probably a gun every 8-10 feet on the last pitch. They weren't taking any fucking chances with those races.

White strip of manmade is what the FIS wants. It needs to be bullet proof, not safe or fair otherwise.

I'm certain they're using that crazy machine to inject the slope. Unless temps are over 40 it will be bulletproof.

killington's disastrous hosting of WC ski races

I wish Killington the best of luck!
But pulling it off once, is no certainty of future success.

I’m sure Aspen Ski Co is thanking god, that they don’t have to hold the race next week. It was 60 today and it’s still in the 40’s @ 7pm.

Nice article about Julia and the race today in the local paper.

The east coast needs a race and actually appreciates it more. I truly wish them success.

My place is right at the Aspen finish line and I will miss the athletes.
But in the end, the politics of the race, FIS and the prospect of ASC building a hotel, on land zoned conservation, turned me off to the race.

It's funny that Aspen already told FIS to get bent on WC races once before--I actually worked that last Roche Cup race in the 90's with Kitt leading when the Euros conspired to get it stopped.

You're right, past success doesn't guarantee anything, but as I said last year (and was glad to see Killington prove me right) they weren't going to take any chances--IMO if Kmart had one week of snowmaking weather, barring 70's and rain they were going to make sure they could hold a race (not that FIS would let it happen if it were really that warm, but they would have had enough snow).

And the EC definitely appreciates this, which I heard a lot coaches/athletes/officials commenting on last year. Aspen speed events are always their own special thing, though. And it's a great SL hill right above your place.

Went last year and the best view was rooftop of our RV. From there could see the start and top 4 turns, then the last 18. Plenty of beer, brats, and a bathroom. No parking pass so "blended" with the snowcat crew and crept over early am once they started parking cars...

The East Coast= guaranteed crowds and major publicity for the sport

Yes its going to be ridiculously overcrowded with NY and NJ licence plates, but Killington can only do so much to alter their venue and views for spectators. They probably lose a ton of money hosting this anyway they cant build a stadium or do too much major construction for spectators. My prediction sadly is Killington long term wont host races they will add up the costs and probably decide is drains too much.

Nothin against you or your lady, but a ham sammich and a 12oz Mtn Dew is worth more than 28 Snooki’s.

It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

I need to get a 20oz Dew and the Sammich for 28 Snooki's.

I am going and I know Goniff will be there as well as a bunch of the K-Zone crew.
