    I have some bond funds that have been generating some sweet passive losses when I cash them out to pay the bills.

    BTW dividends are taxed like ordinary income, not like passive gains. They're passive in the sense that you don't have to do anything to get them besides buying the investment, but not passive in the IRS sense. Same with renting out storage space.
