Snowboarding or Splitboarding near Fairbanks Alaska
OK....I might have to move from Colorado my last 2 years in the military. I really want to go to Anchorage but not sure that is going to happen. But, there is a slot in Fairbanks.
Seems like there are 3 areas: Birch hill on the army base, Moose Mountain and Ski Land. Not really much vertical at ~1000+ feet or so.
Anyone have any info on the area or resorts? Moose and Ski-Land are only open on the weekends so could be pretty nice for skinning midweek.
Thanks

FAI ski areas have really low vertical and mild slopes. I haven’t been there since the 90s so I haven’t been to Moose Mtn but Birch Hill in Ft WW is a bit of a joke, and Ski Land was a little better (is it still open?). You can probably skin-lap those places midweek, but that might get old fast. Consider x-c, there are a lot of great trails for that around town.
For legit skinning, head toward Hatcher Pass or Thompson Pass. Or get a snow machine or helicopter or small plane with skis.
Or really push for that Ft. Greely assignment.
