Or is the extra size of the 42 necessary? I'm a little worried about it being overkill.

I have a bca 32 it is good for day trips. I would think 42 would only be needed if hauling ropes or sleeping bag.

I found the 32 to be more than enough for day trips. I fit probe, shovel, saw, small first aid kit, extra layer, extra gloves, camelbak bladder, lunch, and snacks with no problem. Also PMed you some pics.

yea agree 40+ seems excessive for day tripping. never hurts to have more space but as they say, the more space you have....

I traded up. I could fit most everything in the 32 for a day tour, but typically found that I didn't have any extra room. So I going somebody here with a 42 that wanted a 32 and I'm a happy camper. Mostly I don't need all of the extra space, but occasionally I do, and at those times I'm happy I got the bigger pack.I'm occasionally wishing I had something smaller for sidecountrt, but for me, I erred on the right side.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions. Seth
