Assuming the fractures are unilateral and the pulmonary contusion is mild the mortality for 5 rib fractures in someone of Rand Paul's age is 6%, for patients treated in the hospital. 3/4 will require ICU, 1/3 will require a ventilator, avg length of stay is 8 days.

Just a possibility I'm floating here, don't take it personal, but it's possible, just possible, that the shit we write on the PR doesn't actually reflect careful thinking about important ethical values, and that it's really just a bunch of bullshit we put here because we can. And also that Rand Paul is a dick, and although most of us probably wouldn't actually curb stomp him, we enjoy pretending he deserves it.
