    Bode retired today

Good thing the US Ski Team has plenty of young talent ready to fill the voids of the retiring athletes.

A badass for sure. For that matter, anyone who races downhill is a badass IMO, except maybe that north african skier some years back who was making snowplow turns between the gates.

No North Africans race Downhill at the World Cup level.
You have to have certain number of qualification FIS points in order to participate in Downhill or SuperG. There is typically only about 14 Nations that have athletes that have enough points to race in these events.
    So no no Africans.

And why are the headlines that Bode retired "today"?
He hasn't skied a World Cup race since March of 2014.

Not any more. They changed the rules after the fiasco with the North African woman and Eddie the Eagle. The woman was the sole member of her country's (Morocco?) winter olympics team. You'd have to be pretty old to remember her. There was also one year in the summer olympics where there was an African swimmer who had to be rescued--couldn't make it to the end of the pool.
Here are a couple of North Africans from 1992. But the woman was worse.

Not a downhill, that above video is a Giant Slalom.
Even for World Championships and Olympics you still need under 120 FIS points to compete in Downhill and SuperG.

He belongs in the class of American racers you guys are throwing around for sure. I know a lot of people think he could have been up there with Stenmark if he had a 95% gear.. but that's just not how he rolled.

You have to wonder how great he could have been if he didn't fight "the system" so much. Not saying he was wrong, but maybe he would have been even better if he took full advantage of the system. He would be Bode, though.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

^^^I sometimes think that too, but then I remember those videos of him lifting weights in that barn, and living in that trailer with his buddy in Europe, he just had to do it that way. It wouldn’t have worked any other way for him.

    Stenmark = 86 world cup wins, Bode = 33.
There are plenty between Bode and Stenmark:
    Vonn
    Moser-Proell
    Schneider
    Maier
    Tomba
    Goetschl
    Girardelli
    Paerson
    Zurbriggen
    Schild
    Raich
    Seizing
    Wenzel

You also have to credit him for adopting new technology, and driving the sport forward. When he was a J3, he was rarely on the first page, often finishing on the second page. When he was 18, he goes to Junior Nats at the Loaf. Nobody new who he was. He shows up with a pair of retail level K2 Fours, and wins 3 out of 4 events. Think about that, 3 events, same ski. It's what put him on the map. Keen eye for technology, hard work ethic, contrarian by nature and a pure athlete.
Granite State as Fuck, he will always be my favorite skier.

True all that. It's why I believe in one ski quivers. It's the skier not the ski.

This is probably a good thing for safety.

Bode is a badass, loved watching him race. And yeah the K2 Four story is awesome.

It was so wild. At the end he had those Fours with the derbyflex plate, the atomic shock absorber thingy Michaela uses, and the left and right gate doo-dads, and who knows what else he had bolted to them. BUT, I definitely do know he got some of that DPS secret wax, and with his OK allowed them to start the kickstarter.

They use to let non FIS racers ski in the Winter Olympics. They use to show all kinds of footage from these "Olympians" back in the day.
