.Synopsis...
Generally dry weather through the rest of the year with above normal temperatures and patchy morning fog. There is the potential for precipitation for the middle of next week.

.Discussion...
Update: No major changes, just confining PoPs on Sat to the Nrn Mtns with weakening frontal band. QPFs only a couple hundredths expected in our CWA. Models hinting at a pattern change middle of next week as both the ECMWF/GFS open a closed Ern Pac Low and bring a trof inland around Wed. Models diverge after that with the GFS elongating a trof and the ECM building a ridge off the W Coast. Given model timing of closed lows opening and moving Ewd, the timing is often problematic. During this time and looking Ewd, another brutal blast of arctic air is forecast to invade the Great Lake states/New England area. JHM
Little change in weather is expected over the area through the short term, as upper level ridging brings dry weather with mild high temperatures. Morning fog and cool temperatures continue, with local frost possible.
The only exception to the dry weather is for Shasta County eastward to Lassen Park on Saturday, where a slight chance of showers is possible as a weakening frontal band moves into the area. Dry and mild weather is expected for the final day of 2017, with pleasant weather expected for outdoor events for New Years Eve. EK &&
.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Monday THROUGH Thursday)
Upper level ridging will dominate across interior NorCal for the beginning of the extended period. Although models agree on trying to weaken the ridge by the middle of next week, they continue to show poor run to run consistency. An upper trough is expected to push onshore but exact timing and precipitation coverage remain uncertain, with the latest 06z GFS being faster and wetter than the previous run. For now, have introduced a chance of precipitation over the mountains Wednesday night into early Thursday, leaning towards a blend of the GFS and the ECMWF.Last edited by neufox47; 12-28-2017 at 01:58 PM.

^^^ Yeah, they weren't around; and not that many skiers. It really isn't that bad, considering. Sure, it's chunky where it's skied out, but there are some nice patches of sugary fluff in the north-facing glades, and something like spring snow mid-day on the south facing slope down to Tahoe Meadows (which only barely went without needing to take off skis).

Dude, KW was empty during holiday black outs last year as well and it was as good as it gets for late December. KW/Vail has no clue how to attract customers.
For instance, this year they offer a 10 pack kids lesson. Only with rentals and lift ticket. If you have those things, you will pay $15 less per lesson at the door. Forget the fact that most people who might by 10 lessons for a single kid likely already has equipment and a pass.
Good news is it is always empty during the holidays since Vail took over. No one wants to pay $109 to ski on a few icy groomers.

I changed it slightly, but this quote from SnowBrains is pure lemons-into-lemonade gold:
*the snow depth right now actually makes the skiing very exciting on extremely feature-rich terrain.*

So the Vail business model is to co fuse the fuck out of customers?
I guess if you have no idea how much tix will cost on the hill you might use the online purchase option.
On the way up to snowy Tahoe. It was 73F when I left my house at 1pm.
My "comfort" boot is in the cabin. Guess I will see if my foot fits into it tomorrow. It will be close.

Vail wants you to buy a season pass. Otherwise they use all the data they gather from electronic tickets to do price discrimination based on different days.
Vail has got to be hurting this season. All their resorts in the states are hurting for snow.
Just got back from Utah. The colder temps keep the snow in much better shape for a much longer period than Tahoe. But plenty of sharks lurking off piste and yesterday the groomers finally started firming up but it exceeded my very low expectations.
But no doubt, Utah and Tahoe need snow bad.
