Friend of mine took his skis in for a tune in March one year before heading for Alaska. He took them to the place he always uses and since it was spring in California they gave him a spring structure, which made for very painful runouts on the glaciers. Moral of the story--don't have your skis tuned in the spring unless you want a spring structure and are prepared to grind it out next winter or unless they'll do a winter tune for you.
Alpine was quite nice today. Hope they open the bowls tomorrow.

Email from Snowlands today about proposed Rose expansion across the highway. Includes links to submit public comment and their text for suggested comment.
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Releases
Draft Environmental Impact Statement
For Mt Rose Ski Tahoe Expansion
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest has issued a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for a proposed expansion of the Mt Rose Ski Tahoe downhill resort to the opposite side of the Mt Rose Highway from where it currently operates on national forest land.
The downhill resort would like to add 112 acres of beginner and intermediate terrain served by a single chairlift and accessed by a skiable bridge over the highway connecting the north side with parking and other facilities on the south side. The Forest Service has proposed adding a second lift that will transport visitors to the north side and run directly above the skier bridge, reducing potential hazards to cars on the highway below and reducing stress on those riding the chairlift.
The details of the revised DEIS may be found on the Forest Service website:
Click on the Analysis tab in the Project Documents section on that page to access the DEIS documents.
You can find more about this project on our Mt Rose Expansion page at the Snowlands website.
COMMENTS NEEDED
Please write the Forest Service and tell them
- You support Alternative 1, the No-Action alternative. The north side of Mt Rose should be kept free of commercial development, including a ski area, chair lifts, and ski runs. Preserve this area for non-motorized, dispersed, backcountry recreation.
If the ski area expansion is allowed, please implement the following measures to mitigate the impact on backcountry recreation:
- Prohibit any further commercial development of the Atoma Area north of the Mt Rose Highway.
- Require public access to the Atoma Area by the non-paying public, including parking in the ski resort parking lot, access over the ski bridge, use of any restrooms on public land, and designated uphill and downhill routes through the Atoma Area resort area.
- Require continued public access to any national forest land being used as a commercial ski area.
HOW TO COMMENT
You may submit your comments in four ways:
- Via the project website. Click on the "Comment/Object on Project" link on that page.
- Via email to:

Didn’t know crap about base structures so, if you’re like me, you might find this useful. http://www.racewax.com/base-structure-theory/
KT and Headwall were super fun today. Thick and creamy on almost everything - until a lurking ice bump jumped up and bit ya. Hope the guy who injured himself on HW is ok. Heard it was bad.sproing!

got to agree with the above-- the AM side of Squalpine was pretty exceptional today, sure the other side was too.
Kind of like the old days, but with snowboarders...
On the Mt Rose expansion- reference the "Galena Project" from '83-'84 era, financed (I think) by Powder Corp.
Avy research and mapping done by Alpine forecasters and patrol. Plan got grounded, as I recall, when the geography/climate wouldn't support a golf course (?)."if you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind..."

Surprisingly ☆awesome☆ day at Sierra.
Poached gate 2 all day.
Soft, deep, quiet.
Lovely. But poignant.

My guess is that shops are gonna charge more if you require a different stone dressing (and speed) than what they are dialed to do. It's kinda a pita to cater grind to the customers request. It wears out the stone faster, too. At least that was my experience when working as a shop rat with a wintersteiger.
Peeps seemed to miss my post upstream a little. The sweat (in my mind) is about when (not if) they'll open up for public access, i.e. easy access for tomorrow morning powder session (I doubt it). My guess is that all the roads in sugarbowl are private property and the community could restrict access if they wanted by closing those roads at that gate during the off season.
On their site, there's an interesting statement about the palisades "and surrounding area." I have no idea what the surrounding area is. I wonder if that zone is private property. Unless I missed it, they have not opened the palisades for a few seasons during resort ops.

Presumably they don't want to deal with rescues during the off season. I'm pretty sure the Palisades (and all of Disney) are on private property. Judah, some of Lincoln, and Crow's west of the peak are USFS (mostly).
Last year the Judah gate was closed most of the spring (after closing) and summer. I had to go over there for something (and needed a car to bring stuff back) and wound up going in from the summer road along the train tracks. You can always skin in from the ASI area though it's a little less convenient.

Thanks. I agree. The convenience can be great especially when you can park at the village.

Where are you looking to ski exactly? In the SB resort boundary or...? There's always that turn off with several parking spots on Old 40 just before the scenic overlook parking lot.

Dang man looks deep up there. Snowboard photos can always give the impression of uber deepness with the sideways speed check face shot but the waist deep shot of u, the skier, speaks truth. $$$
