Had some friends go out to castle peak. IDK if they just hit the approach trail there and back, but they said it was good. "zero rocks"
Mt Rose Zone was still a little thin yesterday evening. I would not go back until it snows more, or unless you know a place that is all grass and no boulders. Still...Day one for me!

Jesus folks relax, just posting a pic that reflects the lack of snow up high in South lake. I would not call my friends choice in pedals an Epic Fail, at least she got out on a cold blustery snow showery day climbed a couple K and enjoyed hero dirt conditions on the way down, what did you fuckers do yesterday?

Interesting. I drove up to CP yesterday around 2 pm. Castle Peak Road was covered with about 2 feet of thick glop at that time. There were a few trucks parked up on the road, but I guessed that they had gotten up there way earlier (there was a large snowplow berm blocking the road when I was there). Additionally, there was a rather large (compared to my Taco Mama) Chevy struggling in the snow (it looked like they had powered through the berm and then gotten stuck, or perhaps they had parked before the plow came by and were trying to get out). I still have my summer tires on and was sliding and fish-tailing all over the roads up there (I went and checked out the Sno Park on the Boreal side while up there, too). At that time, however, they had lifted chain control over the pass (it was just drizzling by then).
I would be curious to know exactly where and what your friends skied up there. The hike to Basin Peak woulda been a long, nasty slog in the thick, wet snow, that much is true. Perhaps they just banged out one of the short shots on the 4x4 road where all the locals set up features (this would be just before and kind of around the Hole in the Ground Trail break)?
Additionally curious as to where you rode in the MRZ. I know a coupla places that are all grass, dirt, and slick granite, but figured they might be too low elevation to have gotten much coverage.
Honestly, compared to the last 2 storms (both of which I skied), this one was a bust, at least in regards to the quality (i.e. skiability.rideability) of snow (wet and sticky as compared to light and fluffy).
Currently blue skies and dry roads in Truckee @ 6700.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. Kinda sensitive - you can't post a pic with toe clip pedals or rear entry boots and not expect some kind of comment.
I have a buddy who still rides with toe clips (which he hears about plenty, as you can imagine)... and I'm always amazed by how quickly he's able to step out of them.

Anyone know what Mammoth plans on opening this weekend?
Last year you could ski top to bottom opening weekend. I am really hoping for that, but IDK if they have the base yet.

If you look at the McCoy cam, it does not look like there is a base on cornice. You can still see rocks anywhere off the top. So I doubt it will open.
Looking at face of 3, seems doubts 3 will open either.
Of course that all could change with Thursday's system. Looks like it will be north as of now, but if it dips south and drops a foot, the weekend could see more open.
Although I imagine there are decent routes with a pair of rock skis.

Bust of a storm, but at least the biking is still good! I'll take a repeat of 2011's start please!
Here is my season edit from last year! What a season... had a hard time paring it down to 3.5 minutes!

^THIS!
Righteous.
One of the best edits I've seen posted up here because it kind of tells a story, with a framework and everything (starts with the kids, ends with the kids, has resort and BC stoke sandwiched in-between). Nicely done.
