^ believe it or not, there was a time in the not-so-distant past when the Cal-Neva held North Lake live music events and the Crystal Bay Club was a run-down, depressing place. Inept managment since at least the turn of the century has not been kind to a place with truckloads of cool history and a great Showroom. Hopefully Larry's management team will have the golden touch, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

Dont expect a tear-down. Refurb is almost complete, reno tv guy was saying. It has been a few years since it started.
We stayed there. Almost every room had some kind of lake view.

I can confirm that. Been to a couple good Reggae show there back in the day. Steele Pulse being memorable due to so many people blazing up during the show that it set off smoke alarms throughout the casino. Show stopped for ten minutes or so as a spokes person from the band implored the crowd to "Stop smoking da kine". That request was met with a cloud of smoke. Classic.

The Cal-Neva property might be the nicest on the lake. Unfortunately the hotel tower is pretty much made of cardboard. During storms, many of the rooms on the windward side would leak, and the wind would shake the tower. No such thing as a private conversation, either. Not sure any amount of renovation can remedy that, but would be nice to see something happen. Of course, between that, the proposed plan for the Biltmore, the travesty that is Martis West, the Squaw project, Homewood, and the new hotel in TC, along with the majority of houses being turned into motels, we're pretty much fucked.

Meh. It's difficult to get too worked up over the "California Express" compared to all of the stuff mmm...pow! just listed above. Replacing (and extending) hot wheels and/or red dog would have way more of an actual impact, but there are some upsides to that gondola... just none of the stuff they're trying to sell in that video. I have to admit I'd probably end up using it a fair amount when skiing there, so long as you can unload at the mid-stations at the buttress and the far ridge of KT.

The midstations, at least on the Alpine side, are my main reasons for opposing it. Yeah, it's kinda ugly, but I'd only see it driving to the ski area, not the backcountry. Yeah, it would be right next to, or possibly even in, a wilderness area that is overcrowded for a couple miles (and beyond that completely devoid of people), but I've got plenty of places to hike without seeing people or structures. And while it's completely unnecessary and will do nothing to reduce traffic, it's not my money being wasted. However seeing the Buttress getting tracked out before 10 o'clock would suck, even more than seeing traverse tracks coming from lower beaver.

Plenty of places to hike and find un-tracked at Alpine... and frankly, this way the buttress would be open more often. Think of how often you can't get past Beaver anyway? It's a ski resort, if I really want a stash to myself I'll go find one elsewhere.

Same here. AM has the only serious inbounds sidecountry in the Tahoe area--gondola will spoil a lot of it. I don't know how true it is but rumors of a tower in the middle of West Face--that would seriously suck as well.
I hike the 5 lakes trail a lot. Where the gondy would be is well within sight of other manmade structures at both squaw and AM--it's hardly pristine wilderness. the current wilderness boundary is where it should be--where you lose sight of man made structures, like it is in every other wilderness I've hiked. The 1984 Wilderness Act, which authorized 20+ new or expanded wilderness areas in CA, has provisions to purchase private land bordering federal for a number of the areas in the act but not for Granite Chief. Granite Chief Wilderness was always intended to be on land that was already federal at the time. I don't know where the "bulge" comes from but those aren't official maps. The only official map is the one included with the act, which I can't find on line. In any case--the original surveying of the area is highly suspect. Apparently the surveyors did it in the bar and never set foot on the land they were mapping.
The main reason for the gondola is because SV wants to get rid of a lot of parking so they need AM parking for day skiers who want to ski Squaw.
Agree with you on Lower Beaver. Wish it would stay permanently closed--access Beaver only by hiking the ridge. Same with lower reverse traverse--keep HW closed until you can get it from the top. Ain't going to happen though.

Probably. And at least on the Alpine side, I do understand why they're waiting for the gondola to be finalized before the Hot Wheels replacement goes in. Based on the presentations they've made to us Bear Creek Valley homeowners, they're planning to put the base station on the east side of the lodge, potentially displacing the magic carpet, and running the lift over the lodge. It gives them better clearance towards the first tower, and will let you walk from the underused part of the deck right onto the lift. I wouldn't be surprised if the Hot Wheels base station gets built into that same building.

My understanding is that the plan is to permit skiing from both midstations. From the Alpine midstation, you won't be able to ski into White Wolf without Troy's permission. But I believe they're also planning to construct a new chair, called the "Rollers Chair," that will go from that midstation into Estelle.

I've heard from reliable sources that they have gone away from that alignment, it's now supposed to go up the east side of KT, not entirely sure where. And it was 4 towers across the west face which sounds ungodly hard work. Seeing as they've said it won't be built until 2018, they have plenty of time to change the alignment a few more times.

Would think that would run counter to the "family-friendly" vibe they are trying to promote in so much of their marketing. Did the higher ups at the new Aspen-KSL-Mammoth-Intrawest conglomerate approve of this?
