I worked at an ag research facility last year (specifically in the grape industry) where precision ag is all the rage. All fine spatial and temporal scale measuring to manage plants at an individual level across a vineyard using remote sensing. Pretty cool research going on at the moment!

It's coming, get used to it. Industry wins because it feeds more people than any alternative. It's gross and awful but it's efficient.

Have you seen the greenhouses of Spain?

That may be the case in Europe, but not in the US. Not for a long time.

Maybe for ultra specialized crops like Cannabis and Grapes.

We have plenty of land here, and the climate in California and Florida, is pretty much perfect all year round.

There is not a whole lot of water in California. And Florida just had all their citrus destroyed by winds. While they both have good climate, they are not ideal for growing in as we see more dramatic weather patterns. Might find out selves moving toward this faster than one would think to supply all the vons and safeways.

The majority of citrus is getting destroyed by a virus.

I wonder if green house style farming would be able to prevent the spread of that type of virus from grove to grove? It seems like it should.
Aim for the chopping block. If you aim for the wood, you will have nothing. Aim past the wood, aim through the wood.

The Netherlands is the second largest exporter of food and agriculture products in the world. They are the 131st in land size. They export about 70% of what the largest exporter, the United States does, with less than 0.5% of the land size.

It's already happening some at local levels, and will continue.

Netherlands numbers are also so staggering because they almost strictly produce high value crops.

It is here in the US as well but only really for people who can afford the premium.

There is a downside. Granted this is mostly grow tunnels and not permanent/semipermanent greenhouses

I'm amazed that we've been sitting on our asses and not building out huge greenhouse farms already.

If there was market demand you'd see it. All vegetables (or perishables) are grown on contract. Farmers grow extra to be sure they can meet the contract.

More likely it is the aversion to capital investments preventing this

Only the very best tangerines for me. If it's bad, I won't touch it. Ok people.
