Anybody else have an odd allergy to helmet straps?
I've been using the same helmet for a couple years, and for the last 6 months I've been noticing much redness exactly where the straps touch the side of my face. This does NOT seem to be from abrasion. I'm thinking it is allergy to the compound in the straps themselves. Standard flat webbing. I've not encountered this with other flat webbing products though...including the Tevas I wear with regularity. I don't wear the straps super tight or too loose on the helmet...just standard, accepted tightness, so I really don't think it's abrasion.
I've been riding helmetless for the past few weeks (which is very difficult for me to do...I feel naked without a helmet...and God forbid I look like one of those troglodytes that ride around without a helmet!!!), and sure enough...the redness is going away. Never had this problem with helmet straps before. Thinking of changing out the straps with a completely non-allergenic material."The reason death sticks so closely to life isn't biological necessity - it's envy. No...I'm actually trying to gauge if this has happened to others.
I DO get into some pretty thick stuff sometimes, including cow parsnip (similar to the toxins in poison ivy/poison oak)...so I will try washing the straps. Normally, I just take the helmet off and put it back on the shelf. But during any ride I'm often readjusting straps or taking the helmet off, so that's a possible toxin transfer vector. Still think it might be some sort of allergy similar to a latex allergy, though.

I hose my helmet after every ride. Not sure if that is relevant to your issue, but I would just go buy a new helmet anyway if it's a couple yrs old. Brain buckets are the first thing to spend cash on imo.

Yeah man, helmets and any other type of padding/armor that you sweat in and wear frequently need to be cleaned on a regular basis, they are a breeding ground for bacteria. I rinse my helmets every ride, and every other week or so, soak them in a bucket with antiseptic. I also soak my knee pads and gloves the same way.

That's all true. I do hose down the helmet if it gets dirty, but that won't cleanse away any cow parsnip toxins. I guess I've been negligent on that aspect. I do check it for cracks or deformations before every ride. I think I'll wash it thoroughly with soap and if I get another rash, toss it and by a new one.

What pisses me off is that most straps don't come off for easy cleaning. Even my moto helmet does not have a removable chin strap while all the other pads inside easily snap out for a quick wash.
