Weíre you scared of what could happen during the pandemic? No doubt, I wonít short change the stress a small business owner lives with day to day.

I havenít seen your books, nor have I seen Alkas, so maybe you both had only a couple weeks worth of cash before going tits up, but I doubt it. Hindsight shows giving every business regardless of qualifications a PPP loan was probably a step to far, and the definition of businesses getting government handouts. You seriously going to argue there wasnít waste in a trillion dollars getting thrown around with basically zero oversight? Itís why people are pissed. If you canít recognize that fact you just further prove the point.

I'm in the 1%. I had zero economic anxiety from the pandemic. I ended up wealthier. Millions of Americans suffered significant financial trauma during the pandemic. I don't deserve a gold star because I paid a lot more taxes than they did. I got off scot-free.

Wait, except for construction, none shut down and all took PPP, so free labor for the contractors.

Cody is right, we are just arguing over the second boiled potato.

Not so dissimilar to the construction industry I guess.

SFB's axe to grind with Arcade/Cody is curious with context. I understand having a gripe with CG and Brody having their loans forgiven but going after Arcade is an odd choice

The pandemic didn't directly make me richer, nor poorer. I worked harder than I ever have with greater stress than I ever have, with far less free time than I have ever had while a chunk of the world spewed hate my direction for trying to help people.

Some people lucked out and had a pretty good pandemic. I do not blame people for that at all except for a few exceptions.

The resulting inflation is hurting me and many others. I absolutely think that taxpayer blank checks contributed to that, so if those checks were unjustified and immoral, then I am justified in taking umbrage since we are suffering while other benefited: for the companies big and small, the superstars, and the two bit influencers who had loans forgiven (free taxpayer money) when it was either clearly fraudulent or unjustified, I will retain my dim view of them.

If some of those people want to cop a righteous attitude about their undeserved benefits, or flip-the-script and cast judgment on others, especially when those smug people rely on their public perception for success... my view is significantly dimmer.

Saying no to the stimulus is as stupid as checking the box to donate more taxes.

Or, conversely, not taking every legal deduction you can.

The rules on PPP sucked. But donít hate the player. Hate the casino.

Most of your favorite restaurants would be toast.

Essential businesses that barely lost revenue shouldnít have been eligible. But themís the rules. Suck it.

PPP helped my employees through the hard times. Helped us rebound. And survive.

ERTC is a Fuck show of epic proportions. Extra money after the fact. But I took that also. Fuck this system. Itís corporate welfare. But Iíll take what they offer.

Amazing this point is lost on people. Same with 2008.

Inflation has been bad around the world. We aren't even at the top of the list. But the 7500$ to CG ruined our lives? Gtfo.

Glad everyone on the internet has a degree in reverse theory 20/20 macro economics.

The economy didn't crash, but we got inflation. Shit is more complicated than blaming handouts though no doubt it was another stick on the bond fire.

    https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tan...etting-higher/

Should I send back my $5600 economic impact payment that I am still waiting for because the post office and IRS conspired to fuck us over (we are victims for sure). Wouldn't want to overheat the economy with that money I never got.

And I'm one that benefited from restaurants staying open with PPP money. Risking my life like every other person on the planet to keep the fat people fat and cholesterol levels high.

Why all the Caroline Gleich hate?

Iím really sad to see the direction this thread has gone. Good lord, Iím trying to unsee some of these ridiculous responses.

Howís this: Iím a single income, freelance camera guy for film and TV + backcountry ski guide.

The pandemic ceased all work for me for a full 6-8 months. Ski guide work immediately over. Film gigs halted from March to November.

I took unemployment and worked under the table on Craigslist gigs when I could.

Did I take a SBA loan? Absolutely. It helped pay my rent and fix my car. Not everyone here is as fortunate as some.

    Have I applied for forgiveness?

No, it was an EIDL loan, and they arenít in that category. Iím curious if some of yíall are confused about this distinction.

No one is or has. Any program rolled out to help in such an emergency situation will have some level of fraud. Hurricane or flood or wildfire relief for example.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Are those payments driving inflation in Latin America? Because itís way worse there than here. Inflation has been driven primarily by supply chain issues that have arisen due to the pandemic affecting the entire world economy. Itís really not that difficult to understand but for some reason morons continue to be idiots. Are you outraged at the billions in tax payer money we give to the fossil fuel industry? Sure there were bad actors with ppp loans, I saw basically every seasonal worker in the ski industry stop working for a summer due to unemployment benefits being easier to get and more lucrative. But none of that is the driver behind inflation. When a virus affects the entire globe, globalization shows some weak points. Second largest city in the world was recently shut down for months. There were 500+ container ships sitting outside port. That back up of goods will take years to iron out. Hence thereís less supply world wide. If you want less demand to balance that out we can purposely tank the economy and go into a depression. That seems really wise.

::: ::: and altacoup, I used the word "contribute" not "primary driver"

And even if you wanted to be granted an argment that they had no effect, bottom line is still companies and people immorally pocketing taxpayer money that I am on the hook for will make me take a dim view of them, and if they are assholes about it, I take a dimmer view. That position is undiluted.

yea, the whole point was a fire hose to get money out ASAP. There’s plenty of posts from March/April 2020 of business owners shitting their pants because they were a couple payrolls from going under with nothing on the horizon. PPP was a success because the bottom didn’t actually fall out. People arguing that everything would have been fine have severe memory issues.

I can't even follow this thread, it's all over the place. But it constantly makes me think of this comic.

Everyone is up in arms and directing tons of vitriol because someone got something they shouldn't have (arguably). Meanwhile, the oligarchs love this shit, they work hard to stir it up, because it makes people focus on the wrong things. And yes, I'm well aware that you can have space in your brain to hate the oligarchs and hate the people you think didn't deserve a PPP loan (or deserve to have it forgiven). But you're fooling yourself if you think arguing about these crumbs (because that's what they are, crumbs) doesn't benefit the real culprits of our fucked up system.

No, I was not. I believe you're taking my comment in the exact opposite way it was intended.

Pearl clutching over a small biz like Arcade getting a PPP loan (or even someone like CG) is so ridiculous given the many decades of government subsidies for all kinds of goofy shit, especially oil companies. The comic Danno posted upthread nails it perfectly.

    This thread is so weird

She’s smoking hot visually and skiing.

She makes money as an influencer.

I checked her page and she also teaches influencing, sharing her brain power with others.

I never saw the hate thread. Who was hating on her?

    I have nothing but respect.

I just don't buy into the "pay no attention to small time crooks because there are big time crooks" hand waving. Sure the big time crooks want you focused on the small-timers, but the small-timers want you to focus on the big fish. Throwing a classist flavor on the misguided reasoning is not helping either. You can consider the actions of both.

My issue, again, is if I am supposed to care about and respect someone as an influencer, entertainer, and small time industry personality, I expect them to be upstanding good people with good attitudes setting good examples. But now I am supposed to be ignore their illegitimately taking of taxpayer money to fund their smug privelaged hypocrisy? It's OK because big corps do bad shit? Pay no attention?

Fuck that line of thinking. I wouldn't trust that person, I wouldn't want to hang out or be friends with them, and I sure as hell won't respect them as a figure in the ski world.
