Mitch? That seems doubtful it was based on that photo as it was posted multiple times over several years on both the forum and the website.

It’s lazy. MSP knows better but they don’t care enough to make even the slightest effort to put different people in their movies.

Representation matters, and movie companies hold the keys to sponsor dollars and fame, so yeah, it’s fair to call them out.

????? The whole point of your argument is they found a completely different crew this season....

Coalition's post is dumb. Its dumb because it's thoughtless, reactionary and based on a desire to be offended more than reality and history. MSP has done more to showcase the capabilities and equality of women's skiing over their history of movies than any other film company of similar history. Throughout the 2000s they were finding real, capable female skiers who showed women can ski as well as hard as men. I remember being blown away by Wendy's skiing back in 2000 and Ingrid in the mid 2000s. During this time most other companies were including a single token segment mashed together of a handful of female skiers who were sponsored more for bikini shots than skiing.

This year MSP went and made a film with a group of small group of skiers they wanted to work with, just like last year. Turns out there were no gals in the crew, it happens, especially in a sport where most folks are guys. One movie, one year does not mean MSP doesn't value female skiers. To think otherwise is fucking pathetic and to say so is just a cry for attention. Coalition can't get attention for their skis because they suck, so they resort to building credibility through virtue signalling.

Representation matters, and sponsoring companies hold the keys to movie segments and fame, so yeah, it’s fair to call them out.
    Fixed it for you.

You can't fault MSP. If you do, then you don't know how ski movie production works. There are plenty of sponsored skiers who don't make it into a film every year. Its not that they don't have the talent, it's their sponsor(s) not sponsoring them to be in the movie. Totes quid pro quo.

    Who's fault is that?

False. Any guesses on how much these companies pay to have their athletes in a ski movie? Sponsors drive these movies, that’s why TGR movies resemble an hour long REI/Ford ad.

or the athletes frequently supplement or even pay their own way aside from a heli ride or two at optimal filming times. a lot rides on who can pay their own way + marketing money from their sponsors
maybe they'll get free lodging but are more frequently than you'd expect, funding it themselves to the tune of like $10k+, however they manage that

    Don’t forget Sierra Nevada.

How much do TGR athletes make in movies? The upper tier and the lower tier athletes?

they make nothing. they frequently pay to be there out of pocket in addition to their sponsors paying for them to be there
highest tier maybe $50-75k/ yr *from all sponsors*
    lower tier $10k
    european athletes make more though

I have no idea how much it costs these days. I do know in 2010 (the last year I was in the industry), it cost like 15-20k to put an athlete in a major film, with travel costs on top of that.

Yep. Someone like Hoji or Sage who go on a few filming trips a year could easily be into their segments like $50k between travel and sponsor costs.

Uh, their fault. It's really expensive for sponsors to put athletes in their movies, and even if they pay there is no guarantee that they actually make it in. So they only send in their sure bets because if your athlete doesn't make it into the film it's not like they are going to send you your check back.

The problem is that the only real way to become a "famous" skier and make any money, you have to be in these big movies. So it creates a chicken and egg problem where sponsors won't take risks on putting in unknown people, and you end up with mostly the same skiers every year, and few women and almost no people of color.

Then you hear all these things about how women aren't into skiing, but yeah, they go to these movies and don't see anyone like them, so no shit. It seems like a boys club.

It all comes back to MSP charging essentially $50k to make you famous. That is their choice, and they should understand the impacts that it has. Maybe they know, and maybe they don't, but it's totally appropriate to call them out for it.

And the worst part is that all of these movies are exactly the same. There is nothing new or interesting about these movies anymore. If you watch a movie from 5 years ago, and one from this year, you'd be hard pressed to tell what's what. It's largely because it's the same group of people making the movie with the same group of athletes going to roughly the same places every year with a giant fucking Toyota commercial in the middle.

Only a handful of gals are charging full throttle, few more than 10 years ago.

And there are no "people of color" skiing full throttle, so how can one show what does not exist?
The effort and logistics of getting Michelle, Abma, Elyse, Cody, Angel, Johnny, Tatum, and Wiley together to film All In two years ago was monumental and a fresh slant. First time ever that the ratio between the sexes was equal in a ski flick. No awards for their efforts.
Getting this group of women together was Ingrid's idea. And the Gaffneys were into it. Took a couple of years to make happen. Too bad she injured her knee and couldn't participate.
Why the hate from Coalition the very next year?
Who the fuck are they anyway?
The gals in last year's flick couldn't commit to MSP this past winter.
And Christina Lustenberger is just getting discovered in the film world.
So who pray tell should they have had in this year's flick that could have held their own with the crew they filmed with?

I think this is a fair question, but your core assumption is wrong.

There is no reason that every rider in a ski movie has to go “full throttle” the whole time. I think it makes the movies overall less interesting. My favorite segments lately have been ones where it’s clear that the athletes are having fun and show their personalities.

I also think that it makes skiing less accessible and appealing to potential new skiers. Again, most people who aren’t expert skiers already don’t aspire to rip a spine line in AK, so when they watch movies like this it’s easy to think it’s not for them.

I also don’t think it’s fair to ask the athletes to put their lives on the line for every shot in their segment. It’s not sustainable, and we’ve lost way to many friends, colleagues and icons over the years. It causes lots of pros to step back from skiing once they start having families. It keeps women and POC who aren’t willing or able to commit to that out of the films.

If you look at something like the Fifty Project you see a new take on ski films that people are loving because it’s new. I’m super excited about Bentchetler’s Grateful Dead film also. Again, something new and creative. Hell, my favorite “segment” of the last few years is the video of Sage and Pep chasing each other down from the top of Collins at Alta. Two great skiers out having fun and showing their skills and creativity. No better stoke than that.

How many skiers could make stuff like this if they had the resources behind them? How many more people we’ve never heard of could change the sport for better if the definition of success wasn’t just going 110% all the time?

That’s my critique of the industry and especially of MSP. It’s old thinking, and they haven’t cared to address it in any constructive way.

Fucking well said! With a few exceptions here and there, ski movies stopped being interesting or really having any variety more than a few years ago at this point.

IMO, The Fifty is better than all the films this year.
