bought the novel earlier this year at a used bookstore.
    read it earlier this summer.
    WAY different from the film.
while the novel starts with a bang, it soon descends into a mostly socio-political commentary on the class systems that exist in East Coast summer vacation towns. This Peyton Place melodrama is then buffeted by gratuitous, but short, shark attacks.
While the novel is interesting, I think I enjoyed the film more.
funny thing is, Peter Benchley helped pen the script.
I wonder whose idea it was to take out all the melodrama and social commentary.

My 6 year old son's favorite movie. I've probably seen it 25 times in the last year. Not sure if that makes me a bad parent or not.

We had a pair of shark mittens that we would snap at the boy while singing the dunh-duh dunh-duh theme song when he was tiny . He would giggle and laugh!

(He still hasn’t seen the movie at age 12; I hope I’m there when he finally does)

When my son was about 4 we were visiting my parents...my sister and her daughter were having a Jaws marathon.

My son LOVED Jaws and we couldn't get him to leave the TV. Once the movie ended, we left. When we returned Jaws 3D or 4 or whatever was on. He wanted to watch, but was quickly TERRIFIED.

Turns out, while Jaws is a much better movie, the shark isn't very realistic. The later movies, while terrible, have a much scarier shark...to a 4yr old.
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

I believe Jaws is the greatest horror movie ever made.

If the goal of a horror movie is to scare the viewer, what movie did it better than Jaws? Entire towns were financially devastated by that movie, because people stopped going to the beach for a while. That's some serious real life from a fictional movie.

Huge Jaws fan here. One of my top 10 all time. Interesting note, the shark prop kept malfunctioning so it appears in shots far less often than originally envisioned but that ends up being a huge key to why the movie is so great. I think Speilberg also named the shark prop after his lawyer. Did y'all see the same pop-up video (movie) I did? Is that where I saw that shit?

Both are great, but later in life I had a hard time getting around the fact that in the beginning of the Shinning, they are driving on the Peak to Peak Hwy headed North to Estes Park, only to end up at Mt. Hood. [poof]suspension of disbelief[/poof]

Alien could be added to this list too.
The original books are off-the-hook good as well.

There is something that really gets you with a true horror film. Typically the ones that produce sequels are targeted at the superficial scary stuff or just an out and out farce.
Saw, Ring, Halloween, Elm St, Friday 13th, etc. And of course Jaws.

None of those should be mentioned in the same breath as Jaws.

Oh c'mon now. Why does everything have to be a fucking ranking? I am talking about a general vibe of a good horror film vs the gratuitous bloodshed based garbage.

Jaws is one of those movies I will watch any time I come across it on cable. Ditto The Shining, Godfather (1 or 2), The Green Mile, Delores Claiborne, Fast Times at Ridgemont High (uncensored), National Lampoon's Vacation...that is the funniest movie ever made IMO.

You are correct to highlight JAWS as a classic horror film.

I would say the best of the Best. A timeless classic

Ha! Russian accent through a Scottish filter - irresistible!

Not really a fan of the horror genre - don't seem to stand the test of time for me. Frivolous comedy, however, .....
Buckaroo Bonzai, Galaxy Quest, 16 candles ...... these are few of my favorite things.

42 years after it was released, the idea that you can be attacked by a shark while wading a few feet off the beach still terrifies many. I'll bet most of those same people take showers so fuck Psycho. The media doesn't help by playing the relatively few attacks up and making it seem like they happen more often than they do. Great movie though, and when I had a home theater and decorated the walls with posters of what I considered modern classics, this was one of the first I got, and yes...who can forget the "May be too intense for younger viewers" warning next to the PG rating. Brilliant!

That's why I say best horror flick ever. Though I'm not going to argue with someone who says The Shining, those girls haunted me for a long time...
