Best down (no care 'bout w8) jacket in the 150 to 400 range
Looking for a very warm down jacket for mean-mugging around town and shooting rap videos. Don't care about weight because this isn't for climbing.
Had my eye on the Montbell Permafrost Parka for over a year, and have been throwing a few bucks aside each month with the intent of grabbing one this fall -- they were $399 a year ago. Two weeks ago when I went to buy one they're now $459, which made me realize I'm paying for the lightness factor with that garment. Kind of a silly amount to pay for jacket that will get used for driving and sitting in front of fires.
From what I gather Montbell no longer distributes to any retailers, so the only place to acquire their gear is on their website. Finding a sale (especially this time of year) isn't something I expect with the Permafrost jacket.
My Montbell Alpine Light jacket is going into its 7th winter and still going strong. I'm looking for a beefier, warmer piece that I can throw on when it's real cold and I'm not moving around via skis, snowshoes, hiking. TIA.

Best down (no care 'bout w8) jacket in the 150 to 400 range
Is that a price range or a fill range?
My go to for 10 years at least is the Marmot Ama Dablam. 800 fill and cut long. Not a belay jacket like a lot of down coats, but also not as marshmallowy as many expedition parkas. Cheap but great quality.

I have a Feathered Friends belay jacket; I'd put them in the hunt for "best," though certainly not cheapest.

And search on down jackets for other brands. If you're interested you can probably get a code for 25% off from me or someone here.

Nunatak. You can customize the jacket. I have both a Skaha jacket and vest. Great stuff and the owner, Jan ("Yann") is great to deal with.

Don’t overlook Eddie Bauer offerings. Many good cheap warm down parkas.

Rab Neutrino Endurance. It's stupid warm, one of my favorite pieces of gear. Pertex is great and there is no way I'd ever buy another insulated jacket without hydrophobic down.

I've narrowed it down to the Rab Neutrino Endurance and Arcteryx Thorium SV [subject to change upon more research]. Thanks again, will post once I decide.

Feathered Friends Helios Hoody or Volant

Changed my mind. FF Volant is the clear winner. Just have to sack up and drop the cash now.

You'll be happy with it. I have a Helios hoodie that improves my life every time I put it on when I'm on top of some ridgeline preparing to ski some shitty snow.

arewolf, if you're in the Seattle area, go to the FF store and try on both the Volant and Helios. I had a Volant (custom order eVent shell) for 10+ years, used it for mid-winter overnights, hut skiing and tours in cold temps, but was too warm for around town. I sold it and bought a Helios Hoody, which gets much more use. Both are designed very well, good torso fit with plenty of arm/shoulder mobility.

Had a Hooded Helios for a long time; sold it and bought a Mont Bell Mirage parka. The Mirage is lighter and warmer—it's the only box construction jkt in its weight class that I know of. But it sounds like the OP wants something warmer than that...
OP: if you're looking at the Volant, you might want to shop around for others in that same class: Mountain Equipment K7, Rab Positron, etc. These can sometimes be found for cheap, though unlikely this time of year.

"Rab Neutrino Endurance"
I had an older version. For the price I paid it was a phenomenal piece. I see the new ones on sale frequently too. Sold it when I was given a new Patagonia Fitz Roy, which is warmer, lighter and uglier. Honestly, I love fretting over nuances in ski and binding design, but when it comes to down jackets I think differences in price are much bigger than differences in quality. Chances are I will eventually rip a big hole in it anyway.

I have OR virtuoso which is really puffy and warm. As a bonus you look a little to big for wolves to attack.
I need to go to Utah.
Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?
So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks again guys. I came to a decision on an expedition jacket, the Feathered Friends Frontpoint ($499).
After thinking on it a bit more I've said fuck it, I'd rather assign that cash toward a new DH mountain bike about a year from now... the jacket can wait. I can run my Montbell Alpine Light for at least another year. I have a down vest I can layer under it anyway.
